No ethernet controller listed in device manager on R40 Thinkpad after reloading XP

Question

Recently, I had to reload Windows XP and in Device Manager it says there is no ethernet controller. Without this driver the internal wireless will not work.  The system is a type 2682-FXU and I have tried every download the site has to offer with no success.

If any one has a thought on this, it would be greatly appreciated. The onboard wired ethernet connection seems to work ok but without the controller the wireless will not work....

Answer

This model uses the Atheros-chipped cards which identify themselves as "ethernet controllers" unlike other Wi-Fi cards.  The appropriate drivers can be downloaded from the Lenovo support site:

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?&LegacyDocID=MIGR-67214

After the download, you must go into

C:\Drivers\Win\Wlanath and run the setup file from there.
