Please Help - Thinkpad R50e 1834 USB issue

Dear All

I'm really hoping someone here can help me with this. I'm a pretty good computer type fellow, and all my friends give me their pc's and laptops to fix, but this has me stumped.

I have been given a Lenovo Thinkpad R50e 1834 to sort out for a friend so her daughter can use it for school etc.  Despite downloading just about every bios update, driver and utility I can identify for this machine I still have a missing device in the system hardware list.  I attach a screenshot for your info. Even the Thinkvantage software can only tell me "something" is missing.

I will answer any further questions posted and can run a number of other sweeps, belarc etc if that will help.

Thank you in anticipation.......

Guy

Re: Please Help - Thinkpad R50e 1834 USB issue

The picture didn't come out to well.  The gist of the info is:-

Microsoft Windows 2K

5.00.2195

Service Pack 3

Fault in "Other Devices"

"Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller"

PCI Bus 0, device 29, function 7

Drivers not installed.

I have installed all the latest firmware and drivers for the laptop I can lay my drives on from lenovo.

Re: Please Help - Thinkpad R50e 1834 USB issue

Looks like flexing of the southbridge.

You can verify it with a linux live-CD like Knoppix.

On Windows XP-computers USB must run out-of-the-box.

You can ask Nickpaton on http://www.reflowrepairs.co.uk/

Re: Please Help - Thinkpad R50e 1834 USB issue

Many thanks for that reply.

Reading further into this problem online, it certainly seems like a feasible answer.

Everything else on the laptop works fine so I think I will carry on setting up a simple desktop and programs for the daughter and tell my friend not to worry about it. She is certainly not going to be the sort of power user who has big problems because of the USB port only working at USB1 speeds!

Regards

Re: Please Help - Thinkpad R50e 1834 USB issue

Please keep in mind:

Flexing is a permanent growing process. One day USB will fail totally or audio or CD-ROM or other periphal devices do not work anymore. In the final state the computer turns off while lifting or moving and last but not least won't turn on anymore.

This can grow over months or weeks.
