My thinkpad r400 windows 7 professional was reformatted and now whenever I use the volume control buttons, the mute button, or the toggle brightness keys, there are no visual ques that pop up on my screen. They used to be there, but since the laptop was reformatted, they have been gone. I suppose it is a driver issue, but I don’t know which driver it would be. Can anyone please help me?
Thanks SO much!

Additionally, when I try to use the Lenovo drivers update tool, it keeps crashing whenever it "gathers user information"

What do you mean by reformatted? If it is what I suspect, you have probably lost a lot of Lenovo specific drivers. If you can't get your hands on a set of recovery DVD's, I suggest you go thru the driver matrix and manually install any missing drivers. In particular, the missing volume display is controlled by the HOTKEY driver, but the HOTKEY driver itself has various prerequisites, amongst them is Power Management, Power Manager, and possibly one or two others. Read the documentation on each driver. I believe The latest version of System Update requires .NET 4.0. This process of updating all missing drivers could take a while. Good luck.
By the way, the recovery DVD's for Windows 7 for the R400 are the same ones used for the R500, T400 and T500.
