Problem with Intel Management Engine Interface

Hi there,

I'm having a problem with my Thinkpad L412.

I installed Windows 10 from scratch, no other programs or tools besides Windows 10 are installed. (The issue I'm having also occurs when I tried the same with Win 7)

When I turn off the PC by Windows> Shut down, the system shuts off and the screen becomes dark, but the PC stays on and stops reacting, the only way to turn it off is by pushing the physical button on the PC and then the PC will power off but will automatically start again and I need to push the button again to power it off and only then it will stay off.

The PC will start without issues.

I found posts that this behaviour could be caused by the Intel Management Engine Interface, which funny enough, has an yellow admiration symbol in Device Management. It also gives a message which says that the device can not be started (Code 10).

The driver 6.0.0.1179 seems to be the correct one, though. After deleting it will be reinstalled by Windows so I can not get rid of it. Lenovo also states that this is the correct driver.

I tried ideas like disconnecting battery and CMOS battery, downgrading BIOS from 1.39 to 1.35 but nothing helped.
I also tried the Intel Driver Update Utility. It suggested installing a file Intel Chipset Device Software, but that installation failed with 'unknown error'

So I'm running out of ideas and any suggestion and any help is very much appreciated!

Thinkpad L412
Intel Core i3 CPU M370 @ 2.40GHz
Windows 10 Pro x64 (Creators Update)
Intel Management Engine Interface Driver: 6.0.0.1179

Re: Problem with Intel Management Engine Interface

I did run the install and it ended without error message:

'Completing the Intel Management Firmware 6.2 Setup Wizard'

However, there seems to be no change.

The driver installed is still the old one (did a reboot first).

I noticed there was no second part of the installation process as it often is, not sure it should be in this case as well?

Re: Problem with Intel Management Engine Interface

Well try these steps:

Uninstall the IMEI drivers completely from Programs & Features and Device Manager and restart the system.

Try to install this driver which is working fine

  • Make sure that there is PCI Simple Communication Controller Driver in unknown devices in Device Manger.
  • Then try to install the drivers manually from Device Manger>PCI Simple Communication Controller>Update driver>Let me pick...>Have disk>Browse "Now locate the .inf from the folder Drivers>WIN>AMT>Drivers>MEI> and select HECI.inf  and click ok to update.

Re: Problem with Intel Management Engine Interface

Hello Prabhansh,

I tried to follow precisely  your instructions:

I downloaded the new driver

I deleted all entries from Programs&Features

I deinstalled the IMEI driver in Device Manager

I restarted PC

=> PCI Simple Communications Controller is marked as unknown device

I installed the new driver. A warning came up that .Net framework 3.5 is required.

I continued as Win 10 includes 4.5

installation ended successfully

I updated the PCI driver with the HECI.inf file but unfortunately the update stopped with

an error message:

'during installation of the driver for your device in Windows an error occured

Intel Management Engine Interface

The device could not be started (code 10)

regards

Re: Problem with Intel Management Engine Interface

Hey again,

May be its not getting installed as we are trying to install Windows 7 drivers in Windows 10

So suggestion will be to install IMEI directly from Intel and try to install it in same manner as I posted in previous reply from Device Manger>Update driver...

Update us how it goes.

Regards,

Prabhansh

Re: Problem with Intel Management Engine Interface

Prabhansh,

can you confirm that the driver issue is the root cause for the notebook not properly shutting down (as that it was bothers me most)?

Thank you for your support!

Re: Problem with Intel Management Engine Interface

Well there has been mixed response for both IMEI and Turn off fast startup (aka Hybrid Shutdown) are the causes of system not getting shutdown properly in Windows 10. Better try to turn off fast startup & check once.

And also one more thing try to run Lenovo System Update and see if it helps.
