R400 Fails to Display on Dual Screens

2009-07-14, 19:26 PM

We have the following configuration being reported as having an issue when attempting to boot up. Anyone else seeing similar results with machines where 4GB are installed?

OS: Windows XP SP2

Model: R400 T7439-AH9

Advanced Dock Model 2503

Video Card : ATI RADEON HD 2400 PRO DUAL-VGA OR DUAL-DVI

Memory : 4GB

Same configuration with 2GB and 3GB installed function normally. Anyone seeing similar results?

D060904, welcome to the forum,

I'm sorry, but it's not clear to me what you are asking. Do you mean the the boot process is not being shown on the external screen, that nothing shows on the external screens or something else?

If it's regarding booting you will need to set the external screen as boot display device in bios. [Config > Display]

That doesn't sound good.

Does everything work OK without the dock? Do you have theThinkPad open or closed when it's in the dock?

ThinkPad open or closed when in the dock?

I suggest going into bios, (F1 at boot), select bios defaults (F9) and then save changes and exit (F10). Let the system cycle and reboot into windows and then shut it down normally.

When the system is turned off place it in the dock, the dock must be powered. With the screen open, start the system and see if the same occurs? If yes, after shutting everything down, repeat this without the graphics card in the dock, does the same occur?

Edit; for clarity

Removing the video card allows the system to boot correctly. Inserting a different video card works correctly too. Issue seems unique to the Lenovo ATI Radeon X1300 series cards. Updated the system BIOS did not help. Lid open or closed makes no difference. Ironically immediately after I undock the machine it powers on automatically.

I hot docked the device as well to see what would happen and was met with with a Code 12

According to this site the ATI X1300 isn't supported in the dock with the T400. The site was updated at the end of May which says to me it's not a site that has been forgotten. As it works with another card, does the X1300 have a problem?

PCI-Express Graphics Adapter compatibility

The ThinkPad Advanced Dock (2503) supports the 256MB ATI Radeon X1300 Dual-VGA or Dual-DVI, TV-out PCI-Express Graphics Adapter with the following ThinkPad system configurations:

Checked the site and this indeed is the card that we are using for the R400's not the T400's which is non-supported.

Sorry, my error. The R400 is a T400 with other "clothing" and is also not included on the list of compatible systems.

Are you sure the card is not defective?
