I had just got my new ThinkPad R61 7732CTO and flashed the BIOS to the latest version. I had also followed up with the latest drivers provided on Lenovo's site. I'd check the settings in BIOS and those Serial, Parallel ports and Modem are all enabled. After installing both Windows XP and Vista, I just can't find them in the Device Manager. Both XP and Vista installed are with the latest service packs. I also tried flashing back to the old BIOS and even PC-Doctor v2 failed on the diagnostics of those 3 devices.
What would be the problem for those 3 devices not showing up?

No, I'm not using it with the dock but aren't the base hardware of the serial and parallel port in the R61 mainboard?
The modem is built on the R61 mainboard and it also failed the detection.

i am pretty sure the serial and parallel port doesn't show up unless you have the dock installed.
Did you update, reinstall the OS after you used your laptop? also what OS are you using?

I have both R52's and R61's all running XP. I found that most of the time, if I leave the Lenovo software installed, I had a lot of issues come up. After removing all Lenovo ThinkVantage Software, I have had no issues. Not sure if this helps or not.
You can start with a fresh XP install, update with all service packs. Then manually install drivers in this order:
1) Chipset driver
2) Video driver
3) Audio driver
4) Network driver
5) All other hardware drivers
I find this works the best with these laptops. Hope this helps.
