tried to turn on computer yesterday & received Error 2100 HDDO hard disk drive initialization error... Is it worth it to try to replace hard drive or do I move on to new thinkpad? Can data on hard drive be recovered?

Welcome to the forum!
For $50 or less you can buy a brand new hard drive with warranty...well worth it in my book.
Data from the HDD can be recovered in most cases, but that's likely to cost you a pretty penny if done profesionally...
Try booting from a "live" Linux CD and check whether you can "see" the files on the hard drive.
