R61 hard drive replacement

Folks,

I want to replace my R61 hard drive with one that has a bigger capacity. Now, I've done a little research and I could appreciate some input to help me pick the right disk for my notebook.

My R61 drive is supposed to be: 160GB SATA-150 5400 RPM. I learned from different sources on these forums that the dimensions of the drive should be: 2.5" width and 9.5mm height.

Now, what I am trying to figure out is whether:

  1. SATA-150 is SATA 2 or SATA?
  2. A drive with 0.4" (10.16mm) height can fit, because that is the size of most of the drives I'm pulling from Amazon.

Re: R61 hard drive replacement

You're looking for a laptop 2.5" SATA drive. That should help in your search.

You can use SATA (which is SATA-150 or SATA I, all the same) or SATA II (aka SATA 300) but your machine will run at SATA I speeds unless it has a modded BIOS.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

George

Re: R61 hard drive replacement

Thanks for the reply. What about the drive height?

Re: R61 hard drive replacement

9.5 mm is the normal drive height of the hdd used in thinkpads.

Re: R61 hard drive replacement

I am aware of that, but  I was just wondering if a 0.4" (10.16mm) height disk could fit as well, because that is the size of the drives I came across on Amazon.

Re: R61 hard drive replacement

A Momentus XT slipped straight in for me and has given significant speed increase along with 500G space.
