I use an R61 and like it a lot. Some months ago I bought another one, a used R61 via ebay. I briefly looked it over but didn't bother to bring it up. That was a mistake.
Now I started to do that and gulp, it has no touchpad. I didn't realize that from the photo on ebay. Enough time has gone by so that the seller name has been removed so I can't ask them this.
How the heck do I control the cursor? :-) Do I have to buy a mouse and hope there is a driver installed?

Welcome to the forum!
You can control the mouse using the trackpoint (the "red dot" in the middle of the keyboard). Alternatively, you could replace the palmrest with one having touchpad, provided the motherboard has the corresponding connector.
Can you let us know the 7 digit MTM number that is normally placed at the bottom of the laptop, in a black and white sticker?

I discovered the red dot functionality via the web, but I don't have the finger dexterity to make that anything but arduous. Not a spring chicken.
Is this the 7 digit number? It says Product ID 8932CT0.
I am not a hardware person, so messing with the device innards is out. I am thinking getting a mouse working or some sort of auxiliary touch pad with the ability to "mouse click" is my best bet.

You can certainly hook up a USB mouse by simply plugging it in. In general, the R61 models without a touchpad don't have the connector on the motherboard, so swapping the palmrest isn't an option.

Thanks, I will buy a USB mouse and if I can get it to work, I'll come back and mark your answer as the soution.
I can't believe there are people who like using that little red dot.

The ones with the palmrest missing the touchpad don't hane the motherboard connector to support it.
