First time posting here, I'm having issues with my Thinkpad R61E. The issue is actually an old one but I had shelved the laptop for many years thinking I would come back to it eventually when I had the need for an XP system again. Well, that moment has arrived. I need an XP -capable laptop to run my auto diagnosis tool from Ross-Tech. The behavior is still much the same but I've learned a couple of new things by opening the laptop up and poking around.
-Start-up screen has red tint that sometimes continues through, but isn't as noticeable on the desktop or during regular operation.
-In about 5-10 minutes, the screen goes black.
-It has always seemed like the longer I give the system a "break," the longer it will take to fade to black.
-Can still be connected to an external monitor and functions just fine.
What I discovered today:
-The screen isn't completely black, I can faintly see through to the desktop icons, moreso with a flashlight.
-Checked the LCD ribbon at the board to see if it was well seated as was suggested in a forum I came across. It was, but I unplugged it anyway and then reseated it-This immediately brought back the display, but it would go out again after 4-5 minutes. I was able to repeat this over and over and bring back the display anytime by reseating the ribbon, but the time it would last before going dark got shorter each time. Finally, that stopped working, but curiously, when I just start to seat the connector now, I get a flash of bright image, then when I press down it goes black. Very strange.
-The other end of the cable at the screen itself seems to be connected properly.
From what I've read I may need an inverter or a new backlight. Does that sound right? Where would I get those? Do any of the symptoms I'm describing produce an ah-ha! moment for anyone? Thanks in adance!

Red tint at startup means faiing backlight. The only fix is to replace the panel.

Thank you. Do you know if it is possible to order one new from IBM? Or is there another online source you can recommend. I'd hate to purchase a used one and have it fail as well, given the age of these laptops.

Nobody at Encompass Parts or Lenovo Technical Support has been able to find parts for my laptop using the model, type, or serial number.
The gentleman at Technical Support said parts are not made for this laptop anymore. Laptopscreen.com is sold out. Does anyone have a source for a new LCD panel for the R61E? Is it possible the panel has been superceded by another type but would still work. I know a lot of the Thinkpads are almost the same build resgardless of model.
Gentleman at Laptopscreen.com advised me to look for part number B154EW01 V.1. Seems to have the same specs. Maybe that is a generic lcd panel? A search reveals that part is discontinued.

Any 15.4" panel for T61/T61p, R61, T500 & W500 should work. I remember swapping a T61 panel to a R61i of mine.
You can look for any of these models:
I'm not sure how easy these panels can be. I normally use eBay or Amazon to source "old" parts like these.
