RAM Upgrade for L540

2018-01-15, 21:59 PM

Hello,

I have a ThinkPad L450, i5-4300M(2.6GHz) 8GB RAM 500GB 7200rpm HD 15in 1366x768 LCD.

I am planning to replace the 8gb ram with 16gb. However, I am confused if my laptop will support 1866MHz or 1600MHz of RAM. Interestingly I am finding  16gb 1866MHz  RAM for a cheaper price.

Will you please help me decide which one to go for? Here are the two links I am confused between

Welcome to the forum!

According to the original specs you should use DDR3-12800 (1600) RAM source: link (click on the "Specifications" tab)

1866 RAM will probably work, but it will slow down to 1600 speeds. If I were you I would either play safe or make sure the vendor accepts returns in case it doesn't work.

Also avoid any "Value RAM" or "Value Select" modules, as well as any no-name brands.

I went with crucial scanner and it suggested the 1866MHz RAM modules for my system.

I am considering buying it from crucial itself. Do they come under 'Value RAM'?

Also, as I said 1866 one is about 30 dollars cheaper than 1600 modules?

Crucial has no "value RAM" as far as I know.

I know many times newer RAM is cheaper than older RAM, sounds weird but is common... I think 1866 should work, (older ThinkPad series were picky with RAM), but as said before, make sure the vendor (or Crucial itself) will accept returns, just in case you need a plan B.
