Reinstalling Windows R51

Hello,

I have long been a fan of Thinkpads since using my first one (600E) Back in 2001 or 2002. I recently (August) picked up an R51. I absolutely love this computer. It has been stable and has thus far managed to survive the rigors of my personal life. Anyhow, onto the questions...

I want to reinstall Windows due to a couple of problems (some would consider minor but they are annoying enough for me to want a clean install) but my blue Access IBM button does essentially nothing at start up. When I push it it gives me the option to boot normally (into Windows) to go into setup (BIOS) or to select a boot device. I have a T42 as well and have been in love with the little blue button for reasons obvious to anyone who has ever needed to push it so am a bit disappointed that it doesn't seem to work on this computer. So why this isn't working is the first question.

The second question is about the COA. I have read through a few things (including Microsoft's definition of what the COA is) but am still confused on this. I just don't see the point in it I suppose without software. That being said, does the COA mean that I can get an XP CD that will work with the key?

Essentially all I want to do here is reinstall Windows XP without having to pay through my nose for software though I do also wish to understand more about the Access IBM button and in particular why it doesn't seem to be working on my computer.

Thanks in advance for any help/clarification

Jeff

Re: Reinstalling Windows R51

The Access IBM button isn't working for one of three reasons;
1) There is no hidden partition, it has been removed at a some point in the past.
2) The bios settings in security are set to secure, in which case it cannot be seen or be used.
3) The master boot record is damaged.

Suggestions;
Try using F11 instead of the blue button, if unsuccessful go into bios - security and set the pre desktop area to disabled, (visible and recoverable). Then start windows normally and go into drive management, if you do not see an extra partition then 1 above applies, you have no option other than a new install. If you can get hold of recovery cds they will also re-create the partition.
If you do see an extra partition you need to shut down and again go into bios when booting, this time set the pre desktop area to normal and hopefully it will work, 2 applies.
If this doesn't work then 3 applies, there is a repair tool for fixing the mbr, you will need a floppy drive.

Re: Reinstalling Windows R51

Can you make a set of recovery cd's? It should be under Start/ Thinkvantage/ Create recovery set (not disc). IIRC

Re: Reinstalling Windows R51

Hello and thanks for the quick replies.

Hitting F11 on boot did the same thing as hitting the blue button, it asked me if I wanted to enter setup or choose a temporary boot device. I was not able to see a second partition in disk management after disabling the predesktop area so my assumption at this point is that the partition is gone. I'll assume that the previous owner either put a new hard drive in the computer and installed windows fresh or deleted the partition and again, installed windows fresh.

I do not have the ability to make a set of back up CD's as was suggested, that option is not in my Programs menu. Is this something that I can install?

As far as recovery CD's go, that may be the option I decide on. Quick question for that, I would like to dual boot a flavour of Linux on this laptop, will installing the recovery CD's still leave me with this option or will it utliize the entire disk?

Thanks again for the help.

Re: Reinstalling Windows R51

Running the recovery cd's will delete all partitions on the hard drive and create a new recovery partition. Then you will reboot and restore Windows from the newly created recovery partition. Your Linux install will be gone and you will have to reinstall Linux.
