SL500 and Intel Wifi Link 5300

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I have phoned several times with the Lenovo support, but unfortunately, no solution wasfound. I actually thought my question is really trivial: I would like to have an Intel Wifi Link 5300 card in my SL500 (2746 - KYG). Related to the hardware maintenance manual v1, under http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/43y6762.pdf this card is compatible (Intel WiFi Link 5300 2746-CTO FRU 43Y6459).
I am no longer sure
thatthebusiness phone support has the necessary quality and couldsolve the problem. At the beginning theyrepeatedly pointed out that the Intel Wifi Link 5100 could afford my desired 300 Mbit/s, and it would be a misconfiguration on my side. Taking a look at Intel's website -the card only sends max. 150 Mbit/s.
After the employee of the business support
talkedmanytimes to atechnician, he answeredthat the Intel WiFi Link 5300 is generally compatible. There after, I asked whether the FRU No. 43Y6459 is mentioned in my bios, because otherwise the notebook is not functionable and acknowledged his service with error 1802... The supoort guywas very surprised, he had never heard about this error. Atthis point I saw no way to progress the conversation and I ended it friendly.

I would be very happy if
someonehasa solution to my littleproblem. I ordered a card with the FRU# 43Y6459 and installed it. Unfortunately, without success - error 1802, even though this card should be compatible according Hardware Maintenance Manual.
Please
IBM/Lenovo let me get a BIOS which contains the FRU number corresponding the manual http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles_pdf/43y6762.pdf. Alternatively, I would be grateful for a tip, how Ican disable this unnecessary hardware lock.

Thank you for your time!
Greetings,
Jan Gerrit

Re: SL500 and Intel Wifi Link 5300

Hello mate,

I see that the FRU 43Y6459 is compatible with the SL500 2746-CTO. The only way to explain this would be the CTO model don't have the same whitelist than the KYG.

The only way to get rid of that is replacing your BIOS with a hacked one who doesn't have a whitelist. You'll void your warranty and it's at your own risk.

Re: SL500 and Intel Wifi Link 5300

Hi and welcome to the forum Jan!

The Hardware Manual doesn't mention Intel 5300, it's safe to assume that the card is not compatible. There was also a thread on it:- http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/SL-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Problem-with-5300-wifi-upgrade/m-p/154590#M43...

As for BIOS mod, there is none for SLxx series because (according to the modder) unlike other series; these use different type of BIOS.

Hope this helps.

Edit: The one you linked to is an old version of HMM, latest revised publication doesn't list the FRU, could be that they realized their mistake and removed its reference entirely...

Re: SL500 and Intel Wifi Link 5300

Hello,

thanks for your reply. Yes, the card isn't listed longer in the newer HMM, but I don't know why Lenovo doesn't support this card. Some shops sell it special for SL500. It shouldn't make a problem for Lenovo, to provide the Vendor ID in the Bios.

I am disappointed at the largest on the business support, they are unable to say which card work or work not.

Greetings,

Jan Gerrit

Re: SL500 and Intel Wifi Link 5300

Hi!

Please check this out. I'm quite sure 5100 should support speeds up to 300Mbps. Hope this helps!

Re: SL500 and Intel Wifi Link 5300

This isnt near my area of expertice, but I was thinking that if your connection is 300Mbps, it means, that you have 150Mbps up and downlink. I may be VERY mistaken here Smiley Happy Cheers!

Anyway, 5100agn isnt the nicest chip around. Works for random transfers and streaming with a pretty constant speed 12-13MBps, but even at 3 feet away from AP, it jumps up and down with link quality and speed. Well, I could be my AP also.
