SL510 Battery Life & Power Gauge Reset

I just wanted to post something about my laptop as I recently had a problem and tried to find discussion about it on the internet but there wasn't much.

Yesterday, after about 1.5 years of continuous use, 636 cycles, my SL510 battery started acting very strange.  It had been holding diminishing charges, but would still hold a charge of about 2 hours.  Then it went from something like 85% down to the single digits without warning.

I plugged in, but it would only charge extremely slowly up to 16%.  Then it would stay on 16%.  I started searching for solutions.  I updated my BIOS and then updated the battery's firmware.  When restarting my computer it indicated 100% and 3.5 hours of life.  I was happy.  But then when it got to about 85% it plumetted again down to 6%. After that the battery was stuck on 6%.  Then I did the recommended battery power gauge reset.  Here's what happened:

Besides taking a really long time, my battery capacity went from ~42 Wh (out of initial capacity of 51) and "good" condition to 7.47 Wh and fair condition.  It can hold a charge for just 30 minutes now.

I don't blame the battery gauge reset as it seems to have just updated the vital statistics of my battery to reflect the new, harsh reality.  But I am perturbed by the sudden and devastating loss in battery life at a moment's notice.  I was under the idea that batteries lose their life slowly down to maybe 40 or 30%, and then fall faster to nothingness.  Has this happened to anyone else?

This, combined with the goofy "Your battery is not an official Lenovo battery" message I would randomly get, is making me question my purchase.

Also, now it only charges to 9%.  I'm not sure what the problem is...

Ideas?

Re: SL510 Battery Life & Power Gauge Reset

It sounds like one or more of the cells within the pack died, which happens sometimes. Your only choice is to replace, or recell if you're willing and capable.

Curious, which manufacturer was the battery? It'll say in Power Manager as LG, Panasonic, Sanyo or Sony.

Re: SL510 Battery Life & Power Gauge Reset

It is listed as "LGC" so I assume that's LG.

Re: SL510 Battery Life & Power Gauge Reset

I'd try and find a Panasonic celled replacement, if possible.
