one of the Thnkpads I care for is a 15"-XGA-1843-6NG (R51e). But in the hardware maintenance manual the 1843 model list ends with 5xx, there is no 6xx (or am I blind)?
Can anybody with a better inside tell me whether I can treat the box as a 5xx (i.e. for replacement parts)?
Thanks in advance

Not all sub-models are listed in the HMM, since that would be nest to impossible, given the variations. The base information is this:
ThinkPad R51e 1843-6NG
Original description: Celeron M 370(1.5GHz), 512MB RAM, 40GB 5400rpm HD, 15in 1024x768 LCD, ATI Radeon 200M, CDRW/DVDRW, 802.11bg wireless, Modem, 10/100 Ethernet, 6c Li-Ion batt, WinXP Home
Now, if you want to find out the specific FRUs that your unit left the factory with, go to this page:
Enter your ThinkPad's info and go to the next page, then click on "parts originally shipped with this system" link, and it will bring the complete parts list that refer to the original assembly of your unit.
Hope this helps.

Terrific! I wasn't aware of that option!
