Thinkpad L570 (20JR) Unable to boot from HDD CADDY

2018-01-02, 14:52 PM

Basically I have the same issue as reported here: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-11e-Windows-13-E-and/ThinkPad-E560-Booting-From-2nd-HDD-Caddy-Issue/m-p/3414732#M25790

I updated the BIOS to the latest version available 1.26 but this didn't fix the issue. In the other thread they updated to v1.28 though.

My issue:
It seems the boot menu doesn't detect my SSD in the Caddy (Samsung). It is properly sown in the quick diagnostics screen and even detected by the OS of the build in drive.

Hi,
where did you get the HDD caddy for L570? Find nothing, only for other Thinkpads.

Regards

I also have the same issue.
Updated the bios to 1.29, but this does not help.

When connecting the hdd to an USB port it is shown in the boot menu and operates as expected.

If I install the new hard drive in the internal storage slot, the installed OS also boots fine.
Also, the old drive is now installed in the caddy. I cannot boot from it, but it is prefectly accessible, so the caddy is also working fine.

This indicates that there may be a bug in the BIOS.

@Lenovo: please fix....

I don't think there is any thinkpad that boots from a HDD/SSD in the caddy. I have tried the L420, T420, T430 and none of them was able to boot from the caddy. The drive worked fine for storage, but would not boot. I was able to install linux on it and put the boot loader on the other drive and solved the problem. You can work around it, but I don't think Lenovo will ever update the bios to make the caddy bootable.

BTW, don't spend more than 5-8 euros/pounds on such caddies, they are all identical, so buy the cheapeast one from China.

I now installed a M2 SSD instead of LTE Modem, that one is working as expected. You can use caddy as storage.

It is right, all caddies the same. They do fit to be connected, but they dont fit the case, so you get a gap there.

@otheos: My previous Thinkpad W530 could boot from a HDD caddy without any issues. So its definitly not uncommon to use this setup.
Your workaround to add the bootloader to the internal drive is a good one. Thanks!
I will try this as well. Initially I wanted to prevent this to keep the internal drive as is, since this is a corporate laptop, and I did not want to mesh around with the MBR on that internal drive.

I stand corrected, but then again the W series were different beasts in many ways, so I am not surprised they had this ability compared tot he others (the T430, same generation, did not boot from caddy). Thanks.
