having trouble with an R61 thinkpad help please

hi folks

 

i've recently been helping a friend out trying to reset his lap-top after a nasty crash

 

unfortunately everything got messed up and has resulted in the system being wiped and a fresh coppy of windows xp has been installed

 

but i'm having trouble tracking down drivers etc needed

 

sadly i can't get it to conect to the internet and of cause video, sound etc are allso needed,

 

i've tryed downloading several from the support site

but nothing i'm doing seems to work

 

can anyone help or advise please

Why not restore from the hidden partition via the "Thinkpad" button during boot?

mmm hidden partition

 

i shall have a look at that tomorrow my friend thanks for the tip

 

hopefully it will still be there and easy enough to do

 

part of the problem was with it being a second hand machine, the previous owner had removed the pre-instaled vista and replaced it with xp, so sadly the usual built in recovery wasn't working

 

but i have a coppy of wndows xp pro with service pack 3 that i managed to install, and formated the usual partition on the C drive during installation to get rid of everything

 

now its just a matter of sorting the relevent drivers

i'll double check these

 

but some of the ones listed i've allready downloaded and tryed and i'm having trouble as they don't seem to work

 

i think i've tryed all of the ones listed here for the R61 regarding internet (modem, ethernet, wireless lan)

starting with the ones that relate to the 8930 - A41, which so far havent worked, and even tryed others listed in the hope of getting it on-line

 

if i could at least get it to conect to the net i should imagine i should be able to scan the machine for others that may be required, at the moment i'm having to download on another comp and transfer useing USB stick

 

i double click to install and they go through the motions, but none seem to work even on restarting the machine they still seem missing

 

kinda what brought me here, after trying everything i could think of

Hi hoodie, and welcome to the Lenovo User Community!

 

Just checkin something: Lenovo driver installs require two steps 1. Extract 2. Install. When you double click on the download the drivers are extracted, usually to a directory under C:\DRIVERS. You then go to that directory and run the installer, usually setup.exe. The directory and install method can vary - check the installation instructions. Are you doing both steps?

I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!

once again many thanks folks to all that have responded

 

happy to report computer now up and running again, still a few things missing but most of the main stuff has been resolved, sound, graphics wireless etc

 

i feel such a fool for missing that second step
