msata SSD for L440?

Hello finally I got my L440 and made RAM upgrade to 16GB and I also want it to have an SSD. After reading all the manuals and forum messages I think that it have  a sutiable port for an mSATA SDD which will solve my problem in a great way without replacing anything.

My question is, my machine didn't come with an mSATA or WWAN option. While making the RAM upgrade I checked the ports and there is only one seems to be suitable for mSATA but since area is too small I couldn't be sure if it is the one. Can you please check the attachment and tell me if any mSATA will fit in that port? Or maybe it is not for mSATA and I should go with the traditional SSD solutions by replacing the disc?

Thanks

Re: msata SSD for L440?

Hi,

According to the Hardware Maintenance Manual, page 70 that slot is for a WWAN card or M.2 SSD.  An mSATA SSD will not fit.

From what I read here in the boards, finding a high capacity SSD in the right physical size is  a problem.  There are multiple sizes - IIRC the 42mm version is used in Lenovo laptops.

Re: msata SSD for L440?

Hi Z,

Thank you for the answer. Now it's clear. The thing making me nervous was the sizes of the m.2 SSDs that I found. Can you please share any kind of photo or a link for the suitable one if you know any?

Thank you very much. Cheers!

Re: msata SSD for L440?

Hi

I'm also considering ssd for L440 but because I want to keep regular hdd, too I wanted to learn more about msata ssd options for L440. Which ssd did you buy? Or which ones are ideal to use? Any recommendations how to make it all work?

I see you mentioned m.2 ssd ... what's difference from msata ssd? Any examples of these ssds in online shops? Sorry for silly questions ^^

Re: msata SSD for L440?

I installed a 128GB m.2 ssd. This model: http://mydigitalssd.com/sata-m2-ngff-ssd.php It works very well.

Re: msata SSD for L440?

Seems like it will be problem for me to get hands on similar m2 ssd over here, but I'll keep looking and come back with links to be sure if that's what would fit into L440... BTW, as I understand it you use it only as cache and that's what Ive been wondering, too.... Can you actually use m2 ssd in l440 for OS or not?

Thanks Smiley Happy

Additional question - is there actually free space for m2 ssd in L440? Because looking at pictures from this review, I cant see where would I put it http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Lenovo-ThinkPad-L440-Notebook.107632.0.html

Re: msata SSD for L440?

You can use it as a full OS drive, no problem at all! That's what I'm using it for. You might be able to order it in the US (amazon.com) and have it shipped to Costa Rica.

Re: msata SSD for L440?

Hehe sorry for confusion, Im actually from central Europe - Czech Republic. Though I'd still like to know if there's gonna be space or not for this ssd. I'm worried it might be occupied by wwan card which is quite important for wi-fi connection if i understand this right.

If nothing changes, I'm planning to get this exact model http://www.czc.cz/lenovo-thinkpad-l440-w7p-w8p-noviny-na-1-rok-zdarma_3/140894/produkt

Re: msata SSD for L440?

Unfortunately, the MTM type specified in your link provided above (20AT0038) can't be found in the Lenovo Support base so I can't tell for sure if it has WWAN installed or not. I can't read Czech, but so far I see only GLAN and WLAN in the specs they provide. Smiley Wink

So it looks promising. To be sure I'd try contacting the seller...
