nvme/pcie x2 / x4

2019-08-15, 21:54 PM

Hi,

for L390 yoga i7

I've ordered the 128gb version and I want to put a 1gb nvme in it.

I've read the spec sheet, it says the 128gb comes with 2242 PCI x2, with the 256/512gb suppiled with a 2280 PCI x4. I guess the 2242 is held in with an adaptor as per the service manual so I just take that out and off I go.

Now is the x2 or x4 the actual drive, or is it the actual m.2 PCI BIOS that is limited PCI x2?

I'm thinking as its a custom build, it would come with same m.2 PCI slot on all models, does anyone have any idea or has anyone remove the 128gb to replace it with something larger.

Thanks

Hi james1982! Sorry for the delayed response. The x2 or x4 pertains to the lanes. The speed increases if the lane increases however, if it's not NVMe, it can't maximize the 4 lanes speed.

The speed relies on the PCI Express Configuration from the processor. If you have the i7-8565U processor, it has a maximum of 16 lanes. The distribution of lanes will be divided depending on the usage. You can refer to the photo below.

In regards to the size of the SSD, you can find the compatible SSD's here: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/pa/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-l-series-laptops/thinkpad-l390-type-20nr-20ns/20nr/parts/display/compatible. Please check the photo below.
