r61e Intel 5300 network adapter

2008-12-08, 19:15 PM

Greetings!  Our company recently bought a boatload of Lenovo r61e and t61 laptops.  We're trying to do some beta testing for a wireless company that uses Intel 5300 MiniPCIe cards and are having some trouble getting the laptops to recognize them.  After hardware installation, while attempting to boot, the laptop gives an error that an unrecognized card is present and won't boot at all.  We're using the latest BIOS software, and know that the laptops support these cards.  Can anyone steer me in the right direction with getting my laptops to recognize this card?

thanks,
Marcus

you'll need to modify your BIOS with the "no-1802" hack to get an R61 or T61 to recognize an intel 5300AGN card.   contact zender via this thread on forum.thinkpads.com for help with obtaining a modded BIOS.   he should already have a copy ready to go.

fwiw, i have a 5300AGN in my X61s but had to hack the BIOS to make it work.   once you have a modded BIOS installed, the generic intel card sold through amazon is the cheapest way to get what you need.   the only drawback is that the wireless power switch on your thinkpad will no longer work on the wireless card.   Fn+F5 is the only way to power third-party cards on or off.   you'll need an original lenovo card for the switch to work and it's about 4x the price.   if you don't care about the switch then get the generic intel card and save a grip of cash.

good luck!

Welcome to the forum!

Yes, these machines support the cards in question as long as they're original Lenovo-issued ones with a FRU number...not the generic ones.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

George

Hi George,

Thanks for the comments!  Surely they are original, but it won't boot with this card installed.  Any thoughts why?

Oh, I just realized you may be suggesting that the card must be a Lenovo-issue card, not a generic one.  Is that what you mean, or are you saying the laptop must be a Lenovo-issue?

thanks,

Marcus

Great, thanks!  Any chance you have a link to the Lenovo-issue 5300 card?

Well, R61e was never shipped with 5300 card, so you might hit the error even with a Lenovo-issued one, but the FRU number you're looking for is 43Y6459

Throw it in Google or eBay's search engine and start your shopping...

Good luck.

Cheers,

George

i just spoke with the parts department and the FRU number has been changed from 43Y6459 to 43Y6495.   it's $89.50 (plus tax & shipping) direct from IBM and should be in stock later this month.

Great, thanks!  This information is most helpful.  I've already attempted a version of the no-1802 hack that I found via google, but it didn't work with my r61e.  I'll be contacting Zender to get his latest version that works for the r61e and t61 laptops.  Thanks again, you rock!
