No these drive bay is fixed, so what you are proposing is not possible.
The recovery media works on any hdd that you can fit into your hdd bay. So they don't depend on the size of the hdd.

Actually, it is possible. I have done the exact thing you are asking. You need to purchase a
ThinkPad Serial Hard Drive Bay Adapter III. Lenovo sells them or you can find them on ebay. The one I am using is made for the T400s, T400, T500, R400, R500, W500, and W700 models I believe. It fits with the exception that it is not the full 12.5mm high, but rather the 9.5mm high, so there is a slight gap. But I can confirm that it does indeed work in an SL500. I have only used it to clone the original drive to a larger drive so far but it worked fine.
I can not confirm that the link below will definitely work for you, as I bought mine off of ebay after looking at ones with images to match up the connectors on my DVD drive with the connectors on the model I bought. I do believe that the above listed models were the models listed in the one I bought.
So, please understand that I am not saying this one will definitely work. You will have to do some homework before buying. I am only supplying the link so that you can see what the item looks like.
Also, please note that this is not a hot swappable item. You must power off before making the change.
Here is a link to the one on the Lenovo website.
Just my 2 cents.

@CBR954RR how did you remove the dvd burner, as it is not one of those ultrabay enhanced removable drive like those one found on the R60/R61.
Did you have to open up the case to remove it?

Remove the single screw and remove the drive. See pdf page 72 of the Hardware Maintainance Manual.

There's one on eBay.de with 12.7mm height (the English part of the description is wrong). I'll probably be buying it as soon as I can afford a decent SSD...
