what is the difference between memory sticks - 4 chips per side vs. 8 chips per side?

Looking for 2 - 1GB PC2100 (DDR266) or 1GB PC2700 (DDR333) laptop Ram on the internet sites and have noticed there are two different configurations (4 chips per side vs. 8 chips per side) for the same thing but with different brand names. Could I use either type in an R40 to upgrade it, or is one type better than the other?  Please pardon the question if it sounds lame, but I am just learning about laptops and really dont know the answer.

Thanks for the help!

Re: what is the difference between memory sticks - 4 chips per side vs. 8 chips per side?

hey usaimages,

take a read on the following links as it explains about single and double sided memory>>

http://www.computing.net/answers/hardware/double-vs-single-sided-ram-/67771.html

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIMM

As long as the memory that you're getting falls in either one of the conditions as written here >> http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-and-parts/detail.page?DocID=PD013582

Pentium 4, Celeron models:
64-bit Double Data Rate (DDR) non-parity SDRAM memory
PC2100 at 266MHz
Two 200 pin SO-DIMM memory slots, one slot is pre-populated with 128MB or 256MB, leaving one socket available
Pentium 4, Celeron models
Supports up to two 512MB SDRAM SO DIMMs
Supports maximum memory up to 1.0GB
Pentium M models:
Supports up to two 1GB SDRAM SO DIMMs
Supports maximum memory up to 2.0GB

You can use the RAM on the R40
