Re: 30+ second Bios times on P52

2019-10-09, 7:53 AM

Did some reading and found there were a few programs repeatedly giving errors when trying to reload themselves after previously loading.

dxgkrnl.sys
CAD.sys
gzflt.sys
NDProxy.sys
WdFilter.sys
trufos.sys

Seems that this has been a common problem. Anyone have ideas on how I might be able to fix this? I have a windows update queued up for tonight so I'll report on what happens tomorrow.

30+ seconds: is it at windows booting logo (lenovo logo and cycling dots) or just at black screen ?

if it's later, you need update your bios and intel management engine firmware. (go bios and enable install older version of bios first)

It's a black screen before lenovo shows up then the windows logo. If possible I'd prefer to avoid flashing old versions of bios given that was what bricked my laptop in the first place. Does this fix the driver issues as well?

I'd try excluding everything you won't/shouldn't boot from, and make NVMe0 and Windows Boot Manager on top.

Normally, it should be like:

1. Windows Boot Manager

2. NVMe0 (boot drive)

3. USB key (if needed)

4. USB CD? (if needed)

Note: What is excluded cannot be selected in the F12 boot menu. Place those items after your boot drive.

I disabled PXE boot in BIOS, as well as both UEFI IP stacks.

Also, is Secure Boot enabled? If not, enable it. It enables protection from malware, but it's incompatible by many USB bootable keys. Disable Secure Boot when needed, re-enable after. Consider enabling Device Guard for enhanced security later. Enabling them will exclude the possibility of malware running at boot time.

Can you confirm your boot drive is using GPT partitioning?

The boot order doesn't seem to be affecting it, including excluding non-booting items, I've tried the order you showed and it remains the same. SecureBoot is enabled, and I believe DeviceGuard is as well.

Re: 30+ second Bios times on P52

My boot time, with:

  • machine + SSD + HDD fingerprint-locked,
  • 3 second Windows boot menu, and
  • Windows boot to logon background image (not asking login yet)

is ~54 seconds.

P52 i7-8750H, P1000, 8GBx2, Intel 512GB NVMe x4 SSD, BIOS is 1.29, 1TB Sata3 HDD, Windows 10 1809 Pro. Fast Boot is disabled.

So should I expect to be stuck with boot times of this length? Again, a 30+ BIOS time seems ridiculous for this system given previous performance.

Go into the BIOS into the Boot settings and change the Boot Mode from Quick to Diagnostics.

This might help you see where the delay is.

Re: 30+ second Bios times on P52

From my tests, BIOS time on my P52 is about 20 seconds (with fingerprint/disk password processing)... I just can't see how you could get 3-4 seconds, except if the computer was asleep(standby) instead of hibernating or shutdown.

I'm at a loss as how to get such boot times. I'm interrested.

You could also check this setting (in msconfig):

select "Boot" tab, check the "Timeout" setting (in seconds).

If not zero, set it at zero and retry.
