95C CPU temperature while connected to AC (w520)

2018-06-12, 20:35 PM

Hello Sirs,

The problem is that when i'm playing/working on my thinkpad W520 the temperature of CPU is near 95. I had never faced with restarts, but the temp is really high to my mind.

right after (in 20-30sec) after AC cutoff temperature becomes 58-70, of course performance becomes worse.

In attachment you'll find the screenshot with loads on CPU  and temperature of it. And Bios parameters.

Thank you in advance for you help!

Ah if you're also running a game it will definitely be hotter. The CPU and GPU are connected on the same heatsink, and thus will share thermals.

Even though you may not be using the full (4 core) capacity of the CPU, when you are heavily loading one core, Intel's Turbo Boost will kick in and push your CPU to higher frequencies (up to 3.5GHz) if temperatures allow.

On battery, if you are running the discrete NVIDIA GPU, the CPU will be throttled to about half speed. There is no override for this for battery safety reasons.

If you open 5 windows with the game, you should see the CPU frequency drop towards the i7-2760QM's base clock of 2.40GHz in order to maintain the same temperature.

Check for a process that is consuming a lot of CPU. The CPU usage graph suggests a process that is entirely consuming a core.

I agree with  but would add that 95C is still high.  Your machine is old enough that I would remove the fan, clean off the old paste and apply fresh.

Sure. I have lineage2 running at background )
But the question is that even I don’t use whole capacity of CPU, the temperature is high. And only while connected to AC.
If I open 5 windows with the game, the temperature remain the same.

Hello,

Are the fans spinning up okay inside the W520?  Have you tried booting from a Linux CD/DVD/USB flash drive and using the system for a while to see if it heats up under that operating system as well?
