BSOD caused by nvlddmkm - (NTSTATUS) 0xc0000002 - {Not Implemented}

2021-04-12, 7:13 AM

Hi.

I own a P1 Gen3 laptop, and occasionally when I lock my screen and leave the computer, when I come back I realize the machine restarted.

When I look at the logs I see the machine had a BlueScreen related to the Nvidia driver. Opening the memory dump in WinDbg shows this:

Hi Beepi ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Do you have sleep/hibernate enabled on your machine ? If so, then It's highly likely that this is due to the display driver (Nvidia in this case) crashing when the device is put to sleep or brought out of sleep or during sleep.

Here's a few steps you could try to remedy/troubleshoot the situation:

Step 1. Try turning off Fast Startup in the Power Options. (If available)

- Navigate to the windows icon in the bottom left, click it and start typing "Control Panel"
- While in Control Panel, navigate to the "Power Options" Icon / link.
- In the left column, click "Choose what closing the lid does"
- Click "Change Settings that are currently unavailable"
- Unmark "Turn on fast startup" (This does not affect Restarting the computer), but when it starts up again from sleep and/or hibernation.

Step 2. Update Display and MEI drivers

In the event this doesn't help solve the problem, please make sure you have the latest Display drivers and Management Engine Interface drivers for your device.

You can find and install the newest drivers from the Lenovo Support Page
Just plot in the serial number of the device, click the search icon and select your device, then head to Drivers & Software, select Manual Update, then the Chipset and Display & Video Graphics section respectively for each driver.
Right click the files in question and select "Run as Administrator".

Step 3. Uninstall Display Device with drivers and reinstall:
- Press the Windows key + X and select "Device Manager"
- Expand "Display Adapters"
- Right click the AMD, NVIDIA and/or INTEL VGA devices and select "Uninstall"
- If prompted to uninstall drivers associated with the device, tick the box and continue.
- Perform a restart of the laptop.

- Check if the problem happens on the generic display drivers for the card.

Step 4. Run a DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller).

- DDU works almost like a Display driver cleanup utility.

- If the problem keeps happening on the same driver and not generic ones and after the cleanup, then it's driver related and I'd suggest staying on an older driver or wait for an update.

I'd also suggest posting this to the Nvidia Forums.

Regards

Voithos

Thanks, my laptop is configured not to go into sleep when plugged in, so I don't think it's related to the computer crashing when going into sleep mode.

I am concerned about the fact that that screen goes to sleep and there is "Not Implemented" to wake it up again.

Have you got an external monitor attached?

Have you got an external monitor attached though a dock or a port replicator?

Can you share the Intel and Nvidia Driver version installed?

Are you running in Hybrid or Dedicated Graphics mode?

What you just mentioned makes total sense to me! That's exactly what happens!

I am connected through a dock to an external monitor with Hybrid Graphics mode.

Intel UHD Graphics - Driver Version 27.20.100.9316

NVIDIA Quadro T2000 with Max-Q Design - Driver 27.21.14.5266

You have the most recent official Lenovo drivers for your GPUs.

What dock do you use? Are you on the latest firmware of that dock?

Then,

I would make sure I had the latest P1 Thunderbolt firmware as it was updated recently: https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n2vtj02w.exe

and thunderbolt software: https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/mobiles/n2vta05w.exe

If this does not help I would go to Nvidia and download a mildly newer GPU driver:

https://www.nvidia.com/download/driverResults.aspx/168352/en-us

If it still does not work.

Switching to Discrete Graphics in BIOS can sometimes influence the experience.

As a last step:

Does connecting the monitor directly change any behavior?

It seems that I use the latest Thunderbolt Software+Firmware as well...

Firmware Update Tool - 1.1.11.27-N2VTF08W (NVM Image 62)

Intel Thunderbolt Software - 1.41.1030.0

For the docking station, I use Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 135W

I can try to install the Nvidia Drivers, just wasn't sure if it's compatible with my laptop...

FYI, I reported the bug to Nvidia as well.

I didn't try to connect a monitor directly, but I should definitely try to test this with another set of docking station+monitor that I have at home (different products than what I have in the office) and update

Great,

just for completeness, I assume you have the latest dock firmwwre installed?

https://support.lenovo.com/ae/en/downloads/ds505188-firmware-for-windows-10-64-bit-thinkpad-thunderbolt-3-workstation-dockthinkpad-thunderbolt-3-dock-gen-2thinkpad-thunderbolt-3-workstation-dock-gen-2

The Lenovo supplied GPU version is 452.66 and the one I shared is 452.77. I have not had issues with 452.77 on my Thinkpads. I use 452.66 on P53 with RTX3000.

Later versions are not stable, espcially on RTX3000, but even on M2200 with P51.

Dear customer

Sorry for BSoD issue in your ThinkPad P1 Gen3.

Can you share Windows version by pressing "Windows" + "R" key then typing "winver" ?

Also how frequently this nvlddmkm BSoD occur?  Every time after machine being left with lock screen or once in a day?

New Quadro drivers are out on the NVDA website. Great to have constant improvement updates IMO.
