BSOD problems - Lenovo ThinkPad W540

2020-08-15, 18:18 PM

Hello,
My computer is the Lenovo ThinkPad W series (W540), and there are lots of BSOD (Blue Screen Of Death) that keep on appearing. Most of the time, I can't get to the desktop without having a BSOD. I've tried to use installation media to reinstall Windows 10 (Previously it was Windows 7), but it didn't fix the problem. Other people in this forum said this was a hardware problem. When I do manage to get to the desktop, it sometimes freezes, but with the cursor loading, but otherwise, I can't access any applications.  You can find the computer's history here: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile-Workstations/Error-Code-0xc0000221-0xc0000428/m-p/5008337?page=1

I've tried an extended ram test by booting up Lenovo diagnostics, and "Moving inversions 32-bit" failed, however, I tried it again and it passed the test.

Hello,

You might want to try running an extended memory test overnight using a dedicated memory testing program like MemTest86, and seeing what it reports (the free version is more than adequate for this task).

any RAM errors are too many.  Try DIMMs one at a time

Sorry. DIMMs are memory sticks.  You have some number between 1 and 4.  The error is probably in just one of them.  Here is the service manual:

Hello,

So, should I open the computer and check how many DIMMs I have? I checked the manual and didn't find "DIMMs," do they have another name?

Thank you,

Hyena

memory stick?  There is a rectangular cover on the back that is held on by 2 screws.  Remove the battery first?  There will be 4 slots.  At least one will have a DIMM installed

The rectangle cover with 2 screws was located at the opposite side of the battery. Inside, there is one section that is covered in a silver foil, and the other half half has the DIMM (according to the label on it). There are 8 black, small squares (DIMM?) that are fixed on a green circuit.

Thank you,

Hyena

Hi Hyena,

Try to clean the contacts of the memory and connector with some isopropyl alcohol and reinstall the memory.

Test the memory again, and report back :-)
