Balls To The Wall Lenovo / Windows Updates for a 3 Year Old Thinkpad P51

For reasons I do not care to get into I am still on Windows ver 1709 and I have not updated any of the Lenovo hardware components or drivers on this machine. I am thinking of letting Lenovo updates and Windows updates have at it but I am not sure in what order I should do this. Lenovo updates first and then Windows updates or vice versa. Help appreciated. Mocking encouraged.

I am also concerned that Windows drivers and Lenovo's drivers depending upon which one I do first might cause a conflict with one another. I am thinking I want to keep the Lenovo drivers over the Windows drivers so I am leaning towards updating windows first and then Lenovo but I don't know.

It has also occurred to me that an option is I should just wipe the hard drive and install the latest OS and then all of the Lenovo updates but that would of course require the install of all apps and I would REALLY not like to do this however does anyone believe this is indeed the way I should go about this? TIA.

Actually, there is not an absolute order when running windows update and system update in Lenovo vanatge.

Lenovo will deal it well considering different users have different orders.

From my point of view, since your windows version is so old and your PC is in our support list of latest OS version, I suggest you to follow below orders:

  • Run system update in Lenovo Vantage at first. Then your BIOS, ME and drivers will all be updated to the latest version. you can check more times till all is updated and it shoows the PC is updated to the latest status.

  • And then you can update your windows version. The version on your PC is so old. It may take a longer time to upgrade to latest OS version.
  • I sugest you can go to below webpage:
  • And then click the Update Now button, then it will direct you to download a tool.
  • When you run the tool step by step, you can upgrade to the latest windows version. It will take some time. Pls wait for it when all have been done.

After this, your PC version and driver will be updated to the latest version.

If you meet any problems, pls let me know.

If below information can help you, pls mark it as a solution. Thanks a lot.

Thanks for replying. I am concerned that the drivers that Lenovo Vantage will update and install might be changed or conflict when Windows updates the OS since the Windows update might change the new already Lenovo Vantage drivers that have already been installed. Can you comment on this concern? Thank you.

It wont happen. Plus all the W10 update provided drivers are provided by Lenovo anyway.
