Black Bar at the Bottom of P50 ThinkPad

2021-05-03, 21:54 PM

I have a P50 ThinkPad that has a black bar at the bottom of the screen, blocking half the taskbar.  This has been going on for months.  Does anybody know how to fix this?

* I'm running Windows 10 Pro 64-bit.  It is up to date.

* The black bar is absent in screengrabs.

* This is not a hardware issue--the screen works fine in UEFI's screen tests and sometimes even in Windows (until I reboot).  It's not application-specific either; I know Chrome has a bug that does this until you go to fullscreen view, but this doesn't only happen in Chrome.

* My laptop has two video cards: an Intel HD Graphics P530 and an NVIDIA Quadro M2000M.  Windows says both drivers are up to date.

* I have updated the drivers for both with those on lenovo.com.  I have tried a wide variety of drivers, old and new, from Intel's site, NVIDIA's site, and from Windows Updates.  None resolve the issue.

* Sometimes the black bar isn't present immediately after I install the driver package from Lenovo's site for the P50 (n1edl40w.exe), which is labeled NVIDIA N16S/Quadro N16P.  But then upon reboot, the screen flashes like it's testing resolutions and/or installing video hardware, and the black bar reappears.  Sometimes Window's crescendo chime for new hardware plays before the black bar reappears and the drivers fail ("Windows stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43).")  I have a video here https://youtu.be/CjElb6g-8z0 with tape on the bottom-left of the screen for reference.

* I installed Lenovo's INF file for the monitor, and sometimes it appears in Device Manager as "Generic PnP Device" and sometimes as "Lenovo Wide viewing angle & High density FlexView Display 3840x2160."  I'm not sure if this has anything to do with it?

* I've also noticed that sometimes my start menu has an option for sleep and sometimes it doesn't.  I'm not sure what that's about and wonder if it's related.

I seem to have fixed it.  What I think worked was uninstalling the Intel HD Graphics P530 device and installing the Lenovo graphics driver set before Windows started adding the device and installing its generic drivers.

Thanks!

Hello,

Let's see if we can figure out if it is something specific to the currently-installed operating system.

Does this happen if you boot the computer from another operating system, such as a USB flash drive with Linux on it?
