Blu-Ray Player

2010-11-22, 3:46 AM

Can someone provide me with the internal Blu-ray drive (and DVD/CD burner) for the W510?  I'm told there is one but that it isn't found on the Lenovo web site.

go on to ebay and search for Thinkpad R500/R400/W70x blu-ray player.

Lenovo has stopped offering them on the Thinkpad classic line (probably due to the low take up rate by Thinkpad customers).

Just a note that I would have bought (and would still buy) a Blu-Ray player for my W510, if Lenovo had made it an option at a reasonable price. I think a lot of customers would. It doesn't help if you list it for $1k, when the going price is sub $200. I am willing to pay a premium for a Lenovo option, Lenovo ThinkPads are obviously not the cheapest boxes to begin with, but at least the Blu-ray pricing is really too high. So if you want to look at the reason Blu-Ray players are not selling, it's not that we don't want them, it's just that they're not available from Lenovo.

I tried this lead_org, only for my W500. But there's an awful lot of conflicting information out there as to sizes (vert height) of the Blu-Ray drives, and which W Thinkpads accept the same optical drives?

IIRC, the W500 has a 12.7mm height UltraBay.

Pretty sure a 9.5mm drive would plug in and be recognized, but I'm not sure if you can slap a 12.7mm front plate on a 9.5mm drive.

W500 has a 9.5mm height UltraBay.

Can't get a better story describing the upgrade of factory 12.7mm Ultrabay CD/DVD drive in W530 to a 12.7mm LG BT30N BluRay drive than on this other thread from June.

Not only is the LG BT30N only $69 plus free shipping compared to the ridiculously expensive Lenovo parts (which are probably effectively unavailable anyway), but that thread has pictures and instructions describing the transfer of all rails and bezels and parts from the original 12.7mm factory drive over to the new 12.7mm BluRay drive so that it fits perfectly inside and everything closes perfectly and fits flush and snaps shut.

The key, of course, is that the W530 Ultrabay takes a standard slim 12.7 mm drive, rather than an ultra-slim 9.5mm.  So if your laptop (W530 or older) takes standard 12.7mm drive, that other thread provides the exact required HOW-TO instructions to upgrade to that wonderfully priced high-performing LG BT30N BluRay.

WORKS PERFECTLY!!!

I made an error in my last post; the W500 uses a 9.5mm high Serial Ultrabay Slim form factor.

The only reference to a third-party 9.5mm BluRay drive that I've seen is the Panasonic UJ-232A:

I would not trust ebay as away to find or determine what parts work with which W thinkpads. I have seen many claims that an optical drive that 1.2cm tall wth go into a Thinkpad that uses 9.5mm drives.

Is there a similar LG Blu-Ray solution that will work with a W500?
