Brand new P53 - AC Charging will not work

2019-12-12, 20:01 PM

We ordered 2x new P53 laptops on cyber monday.

One of the laptops suffers from this issue, but the other one is just fine.

For the problem P53, the AC Charger will not charge the laptop (the battery drains until it reaches close to 0, then the machine shuts off).   While the laptop is off, the AC charger will charge the battery (just not while it is on).

During startup (before the OS loads), the following error message occurs (complete with typo).

An unknow adapter is connected to the system. To use AC power, please connect the AC adapter which was shipped with the system.

Press the ESC key to continue

The first few times I booted the problem P53, this problem was NOT present.

Here are the sequence of steps (starting late yesterday):

1. unboxed brand new P53

2. plugged in the included Lenovo 170W AC power adapter, and booted in default configuration (Windows). Went through required basic setup (no issues)

3. used machine for ~20 minutes to make sure things were running OK (connect to wifi, browse internet, etc.)

4. shutdown machine

5. added additional RAM + a 2nd M.2 SSD (followed the procedures here, including temporarily disabling the battery in the BIOS: https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht509006)

6. boot the machine back up: additional RAM was recognized, but 2nd SSD was not

7. shut back down and re-seated 2nd SSD, after which it was recognized.

Now, when recycling the machine, I get a Lenovo warning about the AC power adapter not being recognized (this is prior to booting into the OS).   The warning is this (complete with typo):

An unknow adapter is connected to the system. To use AC power, please connect the AC adapter which was shipped with the system.

Press the ESC key to continue

The machine will continue to boot up if you press F1, but the battery will drain even though the AC power is plugged in to the point it is eventually at 0% whereupon the machine will shut down.

I have tried numerous things to resolve this

1. I have tried 3 other standard issue  Lenovo 170W power adapters (plugged directly into multiple different wall outlets)

2. I have removed the additional M.2 SSD

3. I have removed the additional RAM

4. I have tried disconnecting the battery, and holding the power button down for 30 seconds

5. I have tried booting with the AC power plugged in (and battery removed).  No dice - won't boot, acts like there's no power

6. I have tried re-selecting the BIOS option to temporarily disable the built-in battery (as shown here  http://download.lenovo.com/lts/RTPW10M0/FOF/RTPW10M0-P53_REM_FRU_00_DisableBuilt-inBattery.mp4).

7. I have tried resetting the BIOS to its default values

Nothing seems to resolve this.

Side note - as mentioned in the original description: this is one of two identical P53 laptops that we bought at the same time (and we're using the same additional RAM / SSD in both).

One notable difference is that for the laptop that IS working correctly, we skipped the BIOS step where you temporarily disable the battery before adding the additional RAM + SSD.

Any ideas?

-Lance

Here's an updated URL for how I solved the problem (the link in my earlier reply stopped working at some point):

I was able to solve this issue by re-seating the ribbon that is behind where the AC adapter connects to the back of the laptop.

Why don't you just contact the technical support? Especially you have a brand new machine which the warranty is clear still effective...

Hi Lance,
The message means the machine cannot read the ID pin in the middle of the power adapter's connector.

Ensure it's there, clean it, try again. If it doesn't work, contact support as the system has a problem.

Hello,

I have the same problem since I got this P53 laptop. But when I plug in and out several times, it somehow recharges. I do not know the problem and do not have a spare laptop to send this to service.

Cen you send the pictures of how you solved this problem. If you can give any useflu tips I will appreciate.

Regards.

Hi Lance, I have a P53 and am experiencing the same problem you had. Unfortunately the link to the details and screenshots for your fix isn't working. Would you please describe your process? Thanks, Constance

The same problem here P53/I9/64GB/2TB. I was opening lower case to add temporarily third disk to copy data. Data copied, disk removed back. When system boots, information about insufficient power supply and in Windows 10 no sign of charging (battery work mode).

Tried to exit flight mode in Windows 10. Helped.

Re:Brand new P53 - AC Charging will not work

In brief, I bought my P53 in August of 2019, and had no problems until November 2020, when I got the exact error message as you did regarding the AC adapter.  Next, I purchased another AC adapter and got the same error message, so I contacted Lenovo to have my P53 repaired under warranty.  My P53 was sent to Ontario for repairs where it received a new main board.  After I used my new AC adapter with the repaired P53 about two times, I got the same error message regarding the AC adapter.  I also tried using the original AC adapter, but got the same error message.  If the problem is not the adapter or the main board, could it be a connector issue or a software issue? I decided to not send back my P53 for further repairs until either a user or Lenovo comes up with a solution and posts it.   I hope this helps you with your own search for a solution.

Re:Brand new P53 - AC Charging will not work

was tearing my hair out trying to get around this Power adapter issue and found the answer to my particular problem here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/cxp5xu/p53_plugged_in_not_charging/

Turns out "Airplane Mode" disables the power adapter. As soon as I turned "Airplane Mode" off the device began charging.

Airplane mode is switched next to the WiFi setting in the taskbar tray.

Hope this helps some other users.
