Brand new P73 - message on screen says: "The connected AC adapter has a lower wattage..."

2020-01-04, 2:16 AM

This is a brand new Thinkpad. Received several days ago and just had an opportunity to turn on today. After initial power on and allowing Windows to perform a few updates, upon restart there was a message on the screen that stated:

"The connected AC adapter has a lower wattage than the recommended model which was shipped with the system. To boot with the AC adapter, please connect the AC adapter which was shipped with the system.
Press Esc to continue."

Anyone know why I would be receiving s
uch a message on a machine that's only about three hours old and if it's possible I was sent an incorrect power adapter? The one I received is 230W/20V.

In addition, the power cord is plugged in properly and I have tried this in two different power outlets. Results are the same.

Thank you!

Hi!
Search around, there was a post about this.

Things to check:
The center pin is :
- Present,
- Straight,
- Clean.

The pin is perfectly fine. Certainly not dirty, nor bent or deformed in any way. When the computer is not powered on, the AC adapter is charging the battery. However, as soon as the computer is on again, it's telling me the AC adapter is not sufficient and will only use the battery power as if no adapter is even plugged into it.

Searching around had yielded a post from 2011 from someone who mentioned that the voltage regulators on the motherboard deteriorate over time. Since this particular unit is only a few hours old at this point, I wouldn't think that would be an issue.

Hi,
I searched and I found one post about a P53 that had the same problem, and it doesn't have a solution.

Basically, the center pin is the ID pin and tells the machine what power adapter you have. It's just a resistor to 0V, with different values for different adapter power levels. According to ThinkWiki (https://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Power_Connector) it should be 4.6k ohms for 230W or 1.9k ohms for 170W.

Since your machine is under warranty, I would contact Lenovo Support. It it's likely an issue with the adapter (test the resistor if you can), but the laptop cannot be excluded.

I get the same message onmy P53, but not on every boot. I would get it sproradically with normal windows 10 boot and every time with a boot off a flash drive. That made no sense to me as it should be everytime or nothingif it's the adapter. I recently used the P53 recovery drive to try and restore my system and after it was fully complete, I now get a 0190 Critical Low Battery error upon boot. Even with it plugged in via AC. No choice but to submit it to warranty service and have them fix this brand new device. I don't get the feeling the issue is hardware related though. I'm running BIOS 1.18 or whatever is .01 behind the latest.

If this will somehow help, I had this message appeared once I've disabled CPU Power Management in BIOS and restarted windows. I thought my power adapter is dead. I then re-enabled it in BIOS, but this message was still there. I fixed it by resetting Lenovo Vantage.

did you solve the problem with your ac plug?

I just had this issue, turns our I had turned on airplane mode somhow. Airplane mode dissables your charge port, so no matter what charger you plug in it will not run the laptop and display this error, only charge it when it is shut down.

hope that helps if your still having issues.

I have only had my laptop 2 days now and here I was taking a meter to my plugs and adaptor to check voltage, I was pretty grumpy for a few hours

Hi,

I managed to fix this by removing the battery and the CMOS battery from the board, and without the AC adapter plugged in, hold the power button down for 30 seconds.

After this I plugged my AC adapter in without the battery or CMOS in and it worked without any error message (apart from time/date incorrect due to CMOS reset)

Hope this works for you.

Hi A few days old X1 Carbon has encountered the same problem.  Tried to get in contact with Lenovo Support and did not get through. Just mark here for future reference.

I was about to go POSTAL; the Airplane Mode was on.  I turned it off and my employee's machine is charging again.

I thank you.
