CF card reader in W700 is sloooow. Any fix?

2009-02-03, 5:21 AM

Is there ANY fix for the incredibly slow CF card reader that is built into the W700?

How does Lenovo tech support answer complaints about this problem?

I read that it is a hard-wired problemthat cannot be fixed by a firmware update.

I tested Delkin ExpressCard 34mm with six difrerent CompactFlash cards (Lexar Professional UDMA 300x (4GB), SanDisk Extreme III 30MB/s ( 8GB), SanDisk Extreme III (16GB), Kingston Elite Pro 133x (4GB), and SanDisk Ultra II 4GB) and it was crashing on my W700 with Vista 64-bit all the time.

ADMIN Edit - There were other threads on this topic in the forum and this was addressed through service.  If you still have a W700 and have experienced this, it can be solved by ordering a replacement daughter card that contains the card reader through service.

I would also like to know if there is a fix.  If I knew it was going to be so slow, I would have ordered it with the 54mm Express Card slot and added a CF reader for the 54mm slot.  Any info would be appreciated.

I fear that the only practical "fix" is to buy a firewire cf card reader.  I read somewhere that Lenovo screwed up the circuitry so it cannot be fixed by a firmware upgrade.

I also have a W700 with CF card reader-- the reader is approx 10x slower than my $10 sandisk reader-- for a notebook explicitly designed for digital photographers this is really inexcusable.

Add this latest finding to the other seriuous errors that Lenovo has yet to explain to their customers:

* BluRay drive option can't output digital audio to anything!

* DisplayPort does not pass through any audio contrary to the Intel specification.

* The internal USB audio card has been designed to prevent digital audio input or output or allow users to "record what U hear".

* The now infamous flexy keyboards (you can request a replacement and they will send out an older version that works fine).

For a notebook that claims to be a digital content creation workstation these omissions are terrible and mar an otherwise suberb product. Isn't it interesting that all these online reviewers NEVER seem to notice things like this. Makes you wonder who's buttering their bread doesn't it?

Wheadley --

What are the primary characteristics of the "flex" keyboard?   What should I be aware of that I may or may not like?

FYI:  At home, my W700 (built 12/25/08) mostly is in a W700 docking station so I have not used the keyboard very much.  I will use it when the W700 is in my RV.

Thanks!

An unfortunate, annoying screw up on Lenovo's part. If the world were fair they would have recognised it as a defect and repaired all the original machines, but it's just a speed issue (albeit an immense one) so nothing will be done. Apparently they have corrected it in newer production models. Just glad I have dual expresscard.

My W700 was built  very recently -- 12/25 /08 -- and it has the defective CF card reader.

GatorBob,

what brand(s)/size(s) of card(s) are you using?   what are the transfer speeds you're getting?   what application(s) are you using to measure the speed?

also, where did you read that the problem cannot be fixed?

thanks,

-erik

I'm sorry but a bad part is a bad part. A CF card reader that takes a hour+ to download a 4gb Sandisk Extreme III card is unusably slow. I'll be asking for a replacement card or a dual expresscard part to replace this one. Lenovo should step up and replace that part on every effected W700. When you pay $5000+ for a notebook the parts should freakin' work.

I agree 100%.  I used to be an IBM executive. IMHO,  IBM would have taken care of this properly.

To what address/phone/individual are you going to send your request for a fix?
