My W700 literally flies since I installed a new Crucial 256GB C300 SDD and also went to 6 GB RAM.  I clean installed Win 7-64 and all my software, including Adobe CS5 and other large software, and I still have 185 GB free on the new SDD. (I also moved the rarely-needed Windows page file to the D drive and that freed up at least 3 GB of SDD space.)  It's clear that the considerably less expensive 128GB Crucial 300 SDD would have been big enough.  A clean install is a must, however!

You cannot upgrade a W700 with a Core i7. Your best options are either the T9900 Core 2 Duo, 3.06 GHz or the QX9300 Core 2 Quad, 2.53 Ghz. It depends on your applications if either clock speed or multiple cores bring more performance. I recently upgraded my W700 from a T9600 to a QX9300. As a small example, video encoding performance was more than doubled by this upgrade. You have to disassemble a lot of parts to do that but the hardware maintenance manual is very helpful and explains every step. There are also videos available from Lenovo.
