CURSOR IS A BLACK SQUARE

2020-04-09, 4:55 AM

The cursor suddenly changes to a black square with a "little hand" inside or "upside-down" sign when the trackpoint is used, I tried to make a print screen but it doesn't appear, so I had to take pic of it. I researched via internet but I couldn't find the solution, is quite embarrasing to work with it and it's random, there's no application that triggers it. I think is something related with the video card since it's impossible to make a print screen (I had to take the pics with the cellphone).

If anyone knows about a solution it will be welcome.

Your pics don't seem to be loading—maybe try re-uploading?

Based on your description, I think I'm also experiencing the error on my X1Y3. I think it starts when using the TrackPoint, but not sure when or how it gets triggered. Doesn't seem to matter what application I'm in.

Besides the black cursor, which shows "at rest", the "Trackpoint scrolling vertically" cursor shows when the cursor would normally show a text selection cursor.

Happy to provide driver/OS information if it'd be helpful.

I was expecting a solution. :-) I can't believe nobody's having the same problem and that nobody can help me.

I can make it go away by:

  1. Go to 'Mouse Settings'.
  2. Click 'Additional Mouse Options'.
  3. In the 'Pointers' tab, reapply any cursor scheme.

As for a permanent fix I don't know yet.

Same problem!! And it doesn't show up on a screen shot for me either. I had to make a video of it in order to document the issue.

In addition, at the same time that the black square shows up, a scroll symbol attaches itself to the pointer and moves around with it. This happens when I'm not scrolling.
The problem goes away when I reboot, but always comes back. This problem pops up with every few hours of laptop use.

Lenovo support had me remove and re-install the display driver and said that if the problem returns, then it's a hardware problem. They gave me a repair authorization.
But since I'm high risk and self-isolating, I'm definitely not going to go drop it off at a repair depot and wait for a fix any time soon. I'd go nuts without my computer during this crisis.

Next, I wanted to convince the laptop-seller to send me a new unit and let me return the old unit (since I bought it for BIG bucks less than 30 days ago).
The seller's tech support wants me to re-set the operating system. I'm reluctant to do that and possibly have to re-install everything and re-do the settings since Lenovo support thinks it's a hardware problem.

So that's where I'm at.

Anyone else out there have any experience with this issue?

Possible solution might also be to enable 'Display Pointer Trails' to allow the cursor to be software rendered (CPU) rather than hardware rendered.

Thank you Jonas! That was a good partial solution. It did make the black square go away. The scroll symbol attached to the arrow point, however, was not fixed by this solution.
Do you think that there's any chance that re-setting the operating system could fix this?
And does re-setting the operating system then require re-installing software, changing settings and re-saving passwords?

Thanks for your help!

I haven't had it happen since I performed the actions below. First you want to reset the cursor, and then you want to prevent it from happening again. Resetting the cursor scheme will help you get rid of the scrollbar.

Set the cursor scheme as described in:
https://forums.lenovo.com/topic/findpost/1306/5008214/5048224.

And then enable cursor trails:

I have same problem on T490 and X1 Yoga 3rd gen.  I've reported problem twice in 2 separate posts in last 3 months with no resolution.  I reported the issue with the scroll bar symbol not the square box issue.  At request from Lenovo support who responded to my last post they recommended uninstalling and reinstalling driver.  I did that.  Still didnt fix problem.  I posted back and no response in over a month.  Reboot solves problem temporarily until you sleep or overnight.  i know overnight the problem definitely occurs.  Sometimes sleep after 30 minutes.
