Camera freezes

2019-08-19, 4:08 AM

I have 2 Lenovo Thinkpads P50 running Windows 10, latest update. The camera freezes on both. Both in the native Camera app and things like Skype. The camera will take an image, there will be a fraction of a second of movement, then the image freezes and stays. I can refresh and it will take a new image, but never a video. I have current drivers and there are no notifications in Device Manager. Both laptops have shown this behavior for about a week.

I have found this problem mentioned in the forum, but there are no solutions (one guy said replacing his hard drive fixed it. I am hoping for a simpler solution).

Any suggestions?

Quick update. I have found that if I roll back the driver, then update the driver, the camera works perfectly - until the laptops go to sleep. When they are brought back up, the camera is nonfunctional again until I repeat the roll back-update procedure. I have the latest driver downloaded form the Lenovo sebsite.

Having the same issue with my P50 (Windows 10 Pro 1903, OS Build 18362.295 all with latest updates). However, I was unable to replicate your results with rolling back the driver and updating again. Camera just freezes after less than a second of turning on, then the camera just shuts down. It will often come back on for another second and then turn off again.

If I can provide any details to anyone that will help resolve this, let me know.

Yeah, messing with the driver only gave me temporary fixes. Finally tracked down this article and it seems to have fixed it for sure. https://www.windowscentral.com/how-fix-webcam-freezing-issue-windows-10-anniversary-update

Seems there is a problem with a Windows update. Had to edit the registry a tiny bit but camera has been working for a few days. Keeping my fingers crossed. Worth you giving it a try.

I also have the same issue, started a week ago. no Joy on all of the aforementioned solutions. I'm frustrated, because of covid-19 lockdown and unable to use laptop to see family and work from home

Hello,

I am frustrated too.... in times of corona, I want to use SKYPE and my integrated Realtek cam is working for a minute and then the program is closed ! The same problem with the Win10 program CAMERA.

I have:

  • Windows 10 Pro with the latest update
  • Lenovo E570 serienr PF0XBHZH  Prod.nr: 20H500B2MB
  • Cam Realtek driver 10.0.16299.20029

First the cam turn on and off, I have found a solution on the web: I have added two keys in the registry under Windows Media Foudation/Platform and WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Windows Media Foundation\Platform  with FrameServerMode=0. After that I thougt it was O.K. but after a few minutes the program was closed....

In Windows Log I have found this error. Please can anybody help me ?

I got the same problem that my webcam was freezing after a second on windows 10.

I followed this site and modified registry for EnableFrameServerMode and it fixed the problem.

Just leaving a note for anyone else reading this.  On 3 x Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga 1st Generation notebooks ( product number 20FR001NAU ) I had installed Lenovo Vantage and applied all the various recommended drivers.  However, the camera was freezing for video (necessary for video-conferencing!) ... half a second of activity per two minutes or so.  In my case, I had to uninstall the driver (Driver Manager > Camers > Integrated Camera > (right-click) -> Uninstall Device and tick 'Delete the driver software', then reboot) and install an OLDER version of the driver.  (I also had to tell Leonovo Vantage to NOT install 'Recommended' updates automatically!).

In my case, the driver on the Lenovo download site for my model was for 'Integrated Camera Driver for Windows 10 (Version 1703 or older, 1709 or later) - ThinkPad''.  Here, the latest available driver was 'Integrated Camera Driver (Version 1909 or later)' distributed in the file: 'n1fcr05w.exe' and contained version '10.0.18362.20105' whose reason for being was 'Fixed installation problem on Windows 10 Version 1709'.  Since I'm on Win 10 1909, you'd think this was best.  But no ....

The older 'Integrated Camera Driver (Version 1703 or older)' 10.0.14393.11252 distributed in file n1fcr04w.exe is the one that works.

Interestingly, with the newer driver, 'Integrated Camera' appears under 'Cameras' in Driver Manger.   With the older driver, 'Integrated Camera' appears under 'Imaging Devices'.

I hope that helps someone.  You're welcome.  Don't forget to decline Lenovo Vantage when it offers updates for the camera!

Thank you!  I also assumed the newer driver would be correct based on my win10 version and also the fact that the Lenovo updater wanted that one.

Using the older driver worked on my system!

Same problem with a relatively new Lenovo Yoga chromebook purchased Aug 2019. Fast processor, lots of memory but Skype or Zoom video freezes on the screen. Major headache. I need to get out my old 2015 Acer Chromebook to use Skype or Zoom. What a pain. Big mistake, should have bought another Acer. I can't find a solution.
