Can I implement Windows 8 System Recovery disks on my W520, although it's for W530/T430/etc?

2013-05-14, 11:57 AM

I want to upgrade my system to Windows 8, but was wondering if I do it without System Recovery disks and just install a win8 pro retail, will the blue ThinkVantage button become invalid?

Or who can tell me a way to upgrade my W520 to Win8, and keep the ThinkVantage button valid.

ThinkPad W520 never had Lenovo Windows 8 Recovery Media. As such you could only do a clean install, which means you would lose the function of the ThinkVantage button.

I believe the Lenovo factory images are designed to be installed on machine with Safe Boot turned on, UEFI, etc.  Therefore, I doubt it would work correctly on a W520.

Actually no: The recovery image DVDs for my W530 seem to work with UEFI or with the old BIOS, with or without safe boot: One can choose in the beginning whether to use GPT or "old style" partitions. To boot the DVD, one even needs to disable safe boot, and allow BIOS boot.

This doesn't mean they work with the W520, but I would give it a try. I used T410 recovery media once for my T400s, and it did work well. The ones for the T420 did not work, though
