Can I use my P50 Laptop as an external monitor?

2018-05-19, 13:53 PM

I'm thinking about getting a Raspberry Pi, but I don't have a monitor I can use.  Is it possible to connect it to the HDMI port on my P50 laptop, and use the laptop as a monitor?  I've seen this done on Apple computers, and it seems like it should work here too.

Your HDMI port is HDMI-out.  You need an HDMI-in (capture) port.  You would need to add a capture port, either via your Express Card slot or your Thunderbolt port

I thought that might be the case.  How would I use the thunderbolt port to do this?

Least complex way to accomplish your overall objective would be to use VNC as a remote terminal on your P50 to connect with RPi on the same network. If you don't have any monitor you can use temporarily on the R Pi, it would require some small configuration gymnastics to achieve -- there aere lots of notes on the Web about how to do this.

I checked and thunderbolt support is limited (at best).  What are you trying to use the monitor for?  I ask, because there is a difference in video capture adapters if you are playing high-speed games vs. using the video for office applications on a smaller device.
