Can a P51 with 40AC0135AU dock drive dual 4k screens?

2019-04-09, 15:39 PM

I have a P51 and a 40AC0135AU dock. Hoping I haven't made a horrible mistake but I can't seem to drive my two Philips BDM4065UC 4k at UHD.

When I plug both in at the same time, the display settings look like below. Basically the left monitor has the full range of settings, but the right monitor does not.

When I plug in only the left monitor, I have the full range of resolution settings:

When I plug in only the right monitor, I have the full range of resolution settings:

I guess the fact that when the monitors are connected in isolation they work fine suggests to me this is some implicit limitaiton. I know from previous reading this was the case with the old docks but was under the impression it would work fine with the thunderbolt 3 docks.

Now that I've done more reading, I noticed the wording on the 40AN0135US is a bit different to the 40AC0135AU page, but "UHD video experience with dual video output" does sound like dual 4k to me. So just trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong.

One thing that is possibly confounding things is that I previously did plug in some old ultra docks and mini docks with these monitors, so I was wondering if Windows has somehow 'remembered the limitations' of these screens? But I've tried several cold boots and don't have any idea how I can get it to forget.

Also, none of the USB ports on the hub seem to work, which is a bit odd to me.

First - the 40AC135 is not compatible with the P51 as far as I know. The P51 needs the 40AC0230 to power notebook and dock.

Second: To get 2 x 4k displays + built in display - you have to force the 4K screens to 30Hz update freqency. That can be done in the NVidia control panel.

So given 40AC135 is not compatible - sencond recomendation is "try it" and se if it works kind of thing.... :)

Hi Adante, Did you install the driver software for the Thunderbolt dock?

Hey JMarkowski, if you mean the thunderbolt 3 drivers yes. I'm not aware of any drivers specifically for the dock.

Anyway sorry for not getting back earlier (could have sworn I posted here but maybe it was somewhere else) but after kaz911 posted the matrix it appears the dock doesn't officially (or unofficially, after having tried) support 4k at 60hz.

I had 2ea. - 4K Samsung monitors and could not get the recommended resolution on the second one. I had to use the USB3 connection off of the laptop for the 2nd 4K monitor in conjunction with the docking station for the 1st 4K monitor.
