Can't enter BIOS

2021-06-29, 17:21 PM

I am writing out of despair, after trying every advise from google except pulling out the CMOS battery to reset BIOS. F keys don't do anything, neither the ThinkVantage button.

Yesterday I have opened the laptop to clean the dust and change the thermoconductive paste. Then I went with installing the new ssd I bought. Eventually, I did manage to install win from USB without going into a boot menu, however, the files got corrupted somehow (OS apps kept crashing) and I ended up installing the ssd as secondary to format it and start fresh. From this point forward, I was not able to get the USB to boot again and I am unable to enter BIOS or any boot menu.

Here's what I tried to enter BIOS:

- Shift + Shutdown

- disable Fast boot

- pressed ThinkVantage button, F1, F2, F8, F10, F12, Esc, Enter at the Thinkpad logo.

What are my options? Would removing the CMOS battery do anything? (I have BIOS settings enabled which I wouldn't want to reset and discover I am unable to get in and re-enable).

P.S. I have a X220 which I am able to enter BIOS and change the boot sequence. At the moment, the new ssd is installed in there and installing win there. Thinking about swapping the SSD back to W520 after the OS has installed. Would you advise doing so?

Hello dobredani,

Welcome to Lenovo Community

May I know what machine are you using? X220 or W520?
I suggest that you share the machine type model / MTM (ex. 81C70000RK) from the sticker as it would help us detail more about your machine variant.

Re:Can't enter BIOS

Hi Lorenzo,

I have problems entering BIOS on W520 4284-Y19, serial number ********

Below I'd like to present in details the issues I've been facing these days. The only reason for entering BIOS, at the moment, is to set the proper boot sequence in order to install win from USB. Since I was not able to do so, I've used X220 to install the OS and I am currently swapping the SSD back and forth between the laptops.

I have tried 4 fresh OS installs, one of which was on an older HDD and the others on a brand new SSD. Tried with the latest build the first three times and the last install is Win 10 build 1909. I chose this build because the same build is installed and working correctly on X220 for several years now.

On W520, every time the OS went through the initial updates after a clean install, some apps would stop working properly. Snip&Sketch closes immediately after being opened, at times the Control Panel window closes out of the blue, and it has happened, on the first install only, that Task Manager would crash when I switched to the Performance tab.

At the moment, if I plug the SSD in X220, Snip&Sketch works. When the SSD is on W520, it doesn't.

Up until I bought the new SSD, W520 was running Win 7. It is still running Win 7 without problems if I plug the old SSD in.

All of the above got me very confused. The end goal here is to have the latest OS up and running, so if you could provide assistance with the apps crashing, which I assume it is either a hardware fault or bad drivers, that would be awsome.

Thanks,

Dani

Hi,

Sorry for the late response

Do you have the installer created for UEFI / GPT or MBR/ Legacy?

Start up menu can be check for the compatible boot options.

Turn on the computer.

When the logo screen is displayed, press the F1 key repeatedly until ThinkPad Setup Menu shows.

Alternatively, when the think log appears on start-up and pressing the Think Vantage blue button should show the boot interrupt for the BIOS option.

You can also review the User guide (page 194) for changing boot sequence.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Thank you for your response. I've explicitely said alrady that pressing F1 or ThinkVantage does nothing.

The installation media was created from the official website download tool for the latest version and Rufus for 1909. I believe it is UEFI for the latest build but Rufus definitely creates the installer for UEFI. When installing the version made by Rufus, I have actually re-partitioned the SSD for GPT.

Thanks,

Dani

Try the same steps mentioned in accessing the BIOS without the harddrive and see how it goes.

No SSD takes me directly to a Boot Menu. F1 or ThinkVantage still doesn't work.

Hello,

I do not have a ThinkPad W520 myself, but I am wondering if you have tried using the Cursor keys or the Tab key to switch over to the Application Menu.
