Can you change the video card on the w500??

2009-02-07, 18:06 PM

I was wondering whether it was possible to change the video card on the w500.. I'm not necessarily looking for a 1gb gpu, but something a little better in the ati line.. Maybe the 3670 or the 3870?? OR maybe something in the Nvidia Quadro line like the fx 770 or 2700??

Look forward to anyones input or experiences in trying!!

Cheers,

i have come to the conclusion that never expect much from laptop graphics. Get a half decent desktop at one fourth the price, you laptop graphics probably will be playing catch up.

I have been looking at the w700.. Impressive specs, especially the gpu.. Great system, but not great for travelling with..

i find it very large. :D

one was dropped on my desk late last week and i honestly haven't had much time to test it.   i'm still working past the "new, shiny toy" stage. ;)

the size and weight takes a full commitment, however it's about the only way to get this much horsepower for use on the road or on-location.   i have a wacom intuos tablet already and find the built-in digitizer quite handy.   plus, the display is probably the best i've seen on a thinkpad in a while.

Erik, are you serious about the display? There's no doubt the W700 is a horse power laptop and it's actually faster than any desktop machine we have at the company I work for... but the screen is pretty bad. I can't believe Lenovo was trying to target (and still is with the W700ds) this machine for pro photographers :smileyindifferent:

The Wacom is a great addition once Lenovo upgrades the **bleep** driver to support 2 button functionality. I talked to a Wacom developer and he told me they sent a new driver to Lenovo more than a month and a half ago (the actual driver is broken according to him).

Don't get me wrong, I'm very happy with my W700 but there are issues with it those can't be sold as advantages, sorry...
