Cannot disable Windows 10 Faststartup on P53

2020-09-01, 3:18 AM

Recently, the ability to set the power plan option on my P53 to disable Faststartup no longer works. I'm not certain when this stopped being selectable, but I believe that it was probably after one of the power management updates (I've no idea which of the several applied). The symptoms now are that I do not have the Faststartup box checked, but the system still will not perform a complete shutdown unless I hold the Shift key down when I select Shutdown. Everything else appears to be normal. Another oddity is that if I check the Faststartup box in the power options, save and shutdown, the box is no longer checked when I restart.

Any ideas here?

Thanks

Is it just your P53 doing this, or are your other models also have same problem?  Is the P53 registered in Windows Insider?  This seems like it might be some kind of Windows bug if a Windows setting is being lost.

The issue was just with the P53. I rolled back the Insider OS release to a point where it didn't have the new Lenovo Settings Power Manager 10.0.127.0 and then pulled the system forward. I then let Vantage update the system with that driver. The shutdown problem is no longer present for the moment and the system will perform a full shutdown without the use of the shift key. My P70, however, never had the shutdown problem with the same OS version and driver. I'll keep investigating if the problem happens again.

For reference, the issue appears to be in the GUI for the power configuration plans. There is a command-line capability using POWERCFG with which you can turn off hibernation completely. If hibernation is turned off, then Fast Startup cannot execute and the system will shut down completely. I haven't seen any reference on the web for occurrences of GUI behavior like this and it could be related to Windows Insider releases. That said, it certainly is not consistent. One other thing that I've also seen was that Power Manager.exe could not be located, but that message has not been consistent.

Hello,

You should be able to disable Hibernation (which, in turn, will disable Fast Startup) by opening an elevated Command Prompt and issuing a 'POWERCFG -H OFF' command.

I know this works under production versions of Windows 10; I haven't tested it on any of the beta versions.

I did use the POWERCFG cmd to turn off hibernation which did turn off the FASTSTARUP. My issue was that there was an update for the Lenovo Power Manager settings driver that seemed to create the issue. Thanks for following up.
