Re: Cannot record streaming audio on W530

I know Procaster, Fraps, and other screen recorders can capture audio without explicitly installing an additional driver, but I'm not aware of any standalone system audio recorders.

So far, I found that GoldWave 5.68 has a loopback out/input device now. The soft. is not free, but the lifetime license gives you access to all the new releases. I have had my license since 2003. It works great, but we're still bound to the output program's volume, there is no way to boost the sound if it is too low. Which is often an issue with web/telecasts.

The best solution would be a registry fix for the Realtek HD driver enabling Stereo Mix. There is nothing to replace it completely as far as I can tell.

I haven't found one sof far.

W530, Windows 7 64bit, 256SSD Crucial M4 boot drive, 1tb WD Blue in Ultrabay, 16GB m-sata expresscache drive, NVIDIA K1000M, i7-3630QM processor, 8gb RAM 1600.

Can't this simply be done with VLC or RecordMyDesktop or any of the many other free desktop recording software ou there?  If it records audio and video, the audio can be peeled away on its own.

I agree that the Stereo Mix feature should be brought back.  And it would seem that it would not be such a difficult thing to do.  Though it is beyond me...for now.

What we use is Virtual Audio Cable.  It's pretty flexible, but takes some tech savviness (though, in the end isn't as difficult as it seems).  It will no doubt do anything that you want.

I advise against readng the author's help and finding someone else's.

Here's what I do: open the VAC control panel and set cables to at least 2.  Everything else stays the same for me. Close it.

Then open up a repeater of the MME variety.  Set wave out to your speakers, set wave in to [Line 1 Virtual Audio Cable].

Open system sound from the system tray icons (right click, select playback devices).

Right click Line 1 (VAC) and make it the default device.

Click Start on the repeater.

Go to whatever software you use for recording and set Line 1 (VAC) as the recording device in the prefs.

If you also want to record your own microphone, you can either use another repeater, or you can set your micrphone to be listened to, by clicking the recording tab, right clicking your mic, and then going to the Listen tab.

For your own mic you'll want to have a headset, because you'll get feedback.

Like I say, it's a LOT, lot easier than it sounds.

The biggest problem, other than the author's English, is the price.  It's not free.  It's at least $25, based on the support level you choose.  Which is probably why the help that the author gives is so confusing.

The splitter idea didn't work. I tried to split the combo headset output so I could route the headphone output to the microphone input while also splitting the headphone output a second time to take the sound to a headset, but I got nothing in the microphone.

Lenovo support person,

Please let us know if drivers that fix this audio mix problem will be released.

I consider this a bug to be fixed but perhaps the  functionality was intentionally removed to prevent people from recording copyrighted material that is publically broadcast on the internet with no reasonable expectation of privacy. In that case I want to make that determination not Microsoft.

In the end the functionality removal doesn't stop people from doing things Microsoft doesn't want them to do, it just makes the Russian authors of crapy third party software like Virtual Audio Cable rich at our expense and pisses off your user base. Is that the best thing to do?

Please let us know if there will be a fix.

The screen capture program you mention gets both sound and video?

Thanks for your response.  The specific ability I thouoght was the subject was the  Expression Encoder. Please advise if otherwise. I went to the following was but was unable to set it up.

http://www.microsoft.com/expression/eng/

Downloaded standard Expression Encoder 4 for SP2. Pro is not being sold.

Intention - to record directly from my my host computer's integrated video and audio capabilities

Had troublre setting up: There are some basics that I didn't see in the Expression Encoder Help file.

The help instructions seem to expect a web camera. This is not the direct screen capture I was looking for. But in case I presumed too much I continued.

To set up the environment, the instructions are to use Main Screen Edit Options. I tried starting a Transcoder and also a Silverlight project from New ...; then went over to the preset/systems tabs on the left, but found no combination that helped.

I also tried a few other programs mentioned, but none of them seem to be working for me.  Win7 SP1, Lenovo W530.

It's absurd that after spending over $2500 on my W530, I can't record sound from the computer!!!! AND THAT TO, SOMETHING MANUALLY DISABLED. **bleep** Lenovo, just **bleep**.
