Changing Video Card on p70

2016-02-17, 1:40 AM

Hi:)

I was wondering if it's possible to change video card on p70. Right now, it's with basic m600m, but I wanted to upgrade to probably m3000m. I am thinking they are likely soldered, but maybe something can be done?

TIA

No its not soldered. Its an actual video card held in a large slot. Its called an MXM module. The card itself is easily removable/insertable, but you need to disassemble the entire machine to get to it. For me, the open questions are:

1) If lenovo will make the cards available for individual purchase or if the P70 is compatible with 3rd party cards?

2) Is there a firmware restriction holding the machine to the card that was purchased?

3) My intuition is that they did, but I don't know for certain whether they used the same heatsink for all models. The higher numbered cards generate considerablely more heat than the m600m, so care should be taken with the temperatures:

Here is a nice general overview about MXM modules that is not specific to the P70:

Thanks for the info.

Sounds a bit complicated for my liking. Not only sourcing the card maybe hard but also the heat sinking and such is a big ????

I wonder if someone else has more insight

Did anyone ever test to see if Lenovo is whitelisting only MXM cards on the P70?

I had upgraded from M3000M to M5000M. A few tips:

1. M600M uses a different heat sink from M3000M, M4000M, and M5000M. Order an OEM heat sink from Lenovo.

2. You also need to order M3000M from IBM directly. No aftermarket part (e.g., Dell branded) will work.

3. DIY is perfectly OK. Read or review the Lenovo P series product maintance video and it wont take more than 2 hours to do it.

Good luck.

Who did you contact to order it from them directly? Everyone I've talked to says the part is not avialable
