Charge P52 over USB-C or with a lighter power brick

2019-02-09, 16:57 PM

I own a P52 (not P52s) with the model number 20M9CTO1WW.

I would like to be able to charge the Laptop with a lighter power brick than the included 170W one. I do not expect a smaller power supply to be able to run the pc. However, I think it should theoretically be able to reduce the power draw from the battery or at least charge the battery slowly while the computer is asleep.

Does anyone know a USB-C charger, that works with Lenovo T or P laptops?

Or has anyone tried to use another power supply with a lower power to charge the P52?

It will not charge over USB-C which is 100w max.  I have been told that the x1 extreme comes with a compact 135W but I haven't seen it.  I don't know how compact it is. I would expect that it would work, but I have not seen the adapter and I haven't tried it.  The x1 extreme lists 4 part numbers: 00HM686, 00HM687, 00HM687, 00HM689.

Any USB-C power adapter will work with any P series laptop that allows a charge from the USB-C port. This only works to charge the device while it is powered off - While it is under use, I am not aware of any USC-C solution to provide an adequate power source to keep up with the demand. I have a P51 Xeon, and i have charged it to completion using a standard USB-C power adaptor while my P51 was powered off.

So far I think I could no charge my P50 with USB-C when switched-off with the 45W adapter from my Miix720. I think your statement is not correct, since it does not apply to all P-series notebooks.

You cannot use a USB-C charger, but I believe a 90-watt slim (rectangular) charge will charge the battery while the machine is turned off,

I'm not sure as to what the differences are on the P51 - but i have indeed charged my P51 Xenon with a wall wart and a USB-C cable while my machine was powered off - Maybe there is a setting in the bios - I do not remember..

That's correct, but I'd rather just like to carry one single USB C device  Usually during traveling I can make it through the day with the battery (especially when charging during breaks).

I'll try a new in line 4x USB A & USB C charger which can supply about 70w on a USB A port and transfer it via some adapter to the Lenovo rectangle plug.

Still total crap that the USB 3.1 can not be used, even with a 45W or 6oW charger.

I have tried the slim universal charging method as well - But be certain that the charger that you buy comes with the correct tip for your laptop - I tried to buy the separate tip from the factory and they wouldn't sell it to me as the charger wasn't rated to handle the current draw. I had to return the charger and purchase a charger with the correct tip.

Alright guys, I got the InLine-Charger!

So some short information:

1. It is significantly lighter and smaller than the original one and also better than the 135W.

2. It does charge the P50 when powered-off or in standby, roughly at 55-60W, which will equal in roughly 1,5h charging-time.

3. It can power the P50 during most of the normal work. Mine got a i7 6820HQ with a Quadro M2000.
It will be not charging, but the battery is not draining.
The only way I found to get the power-supply to shut-off is when running furmark. Even with Prime95 it was running on the puwer-supply.

In my opinion this device is superb for any traveling. It also features a 60W PD outlet (which does NOT power the P50)
In total it will provide 4x USB (from one the Lenovo-tip is connected) and one USB-C.
It will save me to bring 3 chargers when traveling.

Regards,
Maeffjus
