Chassis flex on W700

2009-01-20, 23:30 PM

Does anyone else notice an alarming amount of flexing/creaking under the trackpad, by the middle latch opening, just to the lower left of the digitizer? I would like to know if the issue is systemic.

I understand that the plastic construction is not as important as the internal rollcage in providing stability to the system. But my W700 cost several thousands and it isn't exactly gratifying to find flex in this notebook, and absolutely no flex in metal notebooks that are a fraction of the price, especially given the Thinkpad brand reputation. It's reminding me of my circa-2003 Inspiron!

The rest of the system is thankfully solid, cool 'n quiet and the hinges are impressively engineered, but 95% build quality is just not good enough for the price - when it seems one can get a flexless chassis from hp and apple workstations, direct competitors.

Thanks for reading...:smileyhappy:

I have the same issue.  It has flex from right below the touch pad buttons to the far side of the wacom pad.  About 6-7 inches of flex area.  Very squeaky plastic to pastic noise when pressed on.  Sorry to hear you have the same problem.  I would like to hear from others that may have the same issue and any fixes if any.  Thanks.

Sorry to hear about this issue.  This is the first I have heard about any flexing at all with the W700.  I have several of these systems running in our lab and none of them exhibiting this symptom.  If I had to guess, it almost sounds like the palmrest was not installed correctly from manufacturing.

Would you be willing to take a short (.wmv) movie of this and send to me in a private message?  Not sure if the forum PM will allow for attachments, but I can provide an email address to send to.

Regards

Icepick - thanks very much for responding. I'll email a movie of it in the next few days if you can provide me with an address.

Rolan - You have it worse than I do, mine extends about 2 inches and stops about half-way across the digitizer. I suspect that there is nothing supporting the plastic here and it indeed is some manufacturing mistake, but we'll see.

The palmrest section of plastic on top is not aligned with the bottom of the notebook. It's jutting out slightly, creating a lip which is destabilising an entire section of the chassis, I presume. Dissapointing, I'll have to do something about this, and my bezel which came unstuck one day after I got the notebook, and the Blu ray drive which never worked.......

Thanks for the response Icepick.  If you could pm me an email address to send the file, I can send you a video of the issue.

Have a good one.
