Color way off on new P72

2019-03-12, 19:28 PM

I just received my new P72 (i78750H, nVidia P600 with 4K), but the display's colors are way off.  There is too much red, for instance there is a red hue where it should be completely white.  I opened some graphic projects I worked on with my previous laptop and the colors show screwed (not as vibrant or exact) in the P72.  I've tried to calibrate the colors, but can't get it "just right".

Is it me or is this common for the P72 or could I have a flawed laptop?  Any feedback it greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

The colors on my P72 4k are fine. High saturation due to the wide gamut display though - but that's the reason I chose this display.
So when you have a correct color profile and software that takes care of it (like the Chrome or Firefox browsers) everything should be fine.

When you have no profile (installed) and are coming from an sRGB (or even worse) display the new one will look strange.
But with the profile it should really be fine.

This helped me too

Hi Chris, thanks for the response.  I don't have any other profiles available other than the default profile which is sRGB (and not Adobe as advertised by Lenovo).  I am not keen on display profiles or where to find them, much less install one.  Can you lead me in the right direction?  I use Firefox, but I'm at a loss here.

Thanks in advance.

There's a loooong thread about it:

Super saturated colors comes from the wide gamut. This can be annoying depending on use. I stare at text all day long (programming) so do not care much but for other people (not needing the wide gamut in Pro apps) this can be a deal breaker. This can be alleviated a bit using the built-in Windows 10 calibration tool and the Intel Graphic display app (it's on the Windows Store, do not remember exact name), but it's not perfect.

Chris, I downloaded and installed the profile from Lenovo and it has made a big difference (https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/DS504011).  All is right now.

Thanks again!

Thanks for the info, Bobbie.  I'll give it a good read.

Re:Color way off on new P72

I'm having a similar issue.  Using the most recent P72 monitor INF download (which uses the TPLCD_4124.icm color profile) the color temperature of the display is still a couple thousand Kelvins too warm (very reddish).  Using a utility like the Intel Graphics Control center to adjust the color doesn't work because it's not a gamma issue, it's a color temp issue and AFAIK the only way that is addressed is via the color profile.

When I installed the monitor INF .exe download from Lenovo it installed a ton of other color profiles.  They were all showing up under "Laptop Internal LCD Monitor" in the Control Panel Color Management section, making it impossible to choose the correct one in the Device Profile setting of the Advanced tab.  I deleted all but the two TPLCD_4124 entries so now there is only one "Laptop Internal LCD Monitor" choice listed in the Device Profile list.  Still, even though this is supposed to be the correct profile, the color temp is extremely warm.

As someone who has worked with colors a fair amount and done photo editing, I'm certain that this is not the correct color temperature.  I'm familiar with gamut widths and actual the colors outside of the sRGB gamut are actually rather minimal and almost imperceptible.  The wider gamut of this monitor should not make a big difference in terms of the actual appearance on the screen.

At this point if I can't get the color temp corrected I will have to create a support ticket which I don't want to do.

I disagree with you about the colors being super saturated due to wide gamut.  If you look at the comparison between gamuts, the actual colors that lie outside of the sRGB color space are extremely minimal and almost imperceptible.  They are extremely subtle colors at the very fringes of the range of perception that most people would not even notice anyway.

The issue the OP is having and I seem to be having is clearly an issue of color temperature being off by a significant (a couple thousand) degrees Kelvin.  You can get the same effect if you edit a photo in Photoshop and turn down the color temperature of a photo.

Re:Color way off on new P72

Here is something interesting.  In Linux under KDE I installed colord-kde and in the Devices tab it lists the 20MB002JUS laptop.  The default profile for it lists a white point of 5000K (D50).  I then added the TPLCD_4124.icm which I extracted from the Lenovo monitor INF .exe.  That one lists the white point as 6500K (D65).  That is a significant difference in Kelvins.  However when I select the TPLCD_4124 profile it doesn't seem to actually change anything.  So far in Linux the only thing I've managed to change was the color temp in Smplayer.
