Ctrl Key Build Option

2019-06-26, 17:47 PM

With the new upcoming P53, P73 series, will there finally be an option to choose the Ctrl key to be located at the corner to the left of the Fn key? This seems to be a build customisation that is a long time coming.

Our work desktop keyboard, like all other Windows keyboard, has the Ctrl key at the corner and it is a real annoyance to not perform a key sequence correctly, only to find out I'm pressing the Fn on the Thinkpad without being mindful.

Hi Sam,

Thanks for the reply.

Yes I know about switching the left Ctrl and Fn key in software, but the hardware key sizes, and more importantly the key labelling will be still wrong. It can be confusing when the Thinkpad is used by more than one user.

Why can't the key placement just be the normal Ctrl - Fn style like the rest of the industry, and even Lenovo's own Ideapad laptops?

Like you advised, the Ctrl and Fn key can be switched, so save that switching option for those who wants the current non-standard Fn - Ctrl placement instead.

It is fairly easy to remove the keycaps so if you switch the functionality in the BIOS, you could simply switch the keycaps yourself.

This video shows how to:

We can't simply switch the key caps because the key cap sizes are different.

The P73 has been released, and I'm utterly disappointed to see that Lenovo has again failed to provide a keyboard configuration option of having Ctrl at the bottom left of the keyboard.

There is a Spanish keyboard option that I can switch for $0.00. Why is the bottom left Ctrl configuration, used in Thinkbooks, desktop keyboards, and every other Windows laptop, still not an option?

At this point, I don't even mind paying extra to have the correct keyboard configuration. Can Lenovo slap on an "Upgrade Pricing", like for the processors and storages, and just tell us how much more do we have to pay to get the right keyboard configuration?

There is really not much point obsessing about the CTRL key location: Lenovo will never make 2 different keyboard layouts multiplied by the number of language layouts just for that.
And the key has historically been in that place since forever so it is not going to change. And if it did, existing users would probably riot over this.
So just get used to the position or swap it in BIOS or Lenovo Vantage.

Well the fact is Lenovo is making 2 different keyboard layouts right now - their Thinkpad line vs ALL their other computing product lines (Thinkbooks, Ideapads, Standalone keyboards). This makes no sense from a compatibility standpoint.

What I get from your response is that there is really no good reason to keep the current configuration, except for some arbitrary historical reason, and to cater to some existing users who will "riot"

These users certainly weren't on Lenovo's mind when they took away the 7 row layout, so why stop now. By your own reasoning, how about let the CTRL key be in the proper bottom left corner, and let the "rioting" users get used to the position or swap it in BIOS or Lenovo Vantage?

And like to point out that all 3 international keyboard standards, ISO, ANSI, JIS have the ctrl key at the bottom left

Once upon a time, IBM (Thinkpad's progenitor) actually got the left Ctrl key right.

and a version in black that looks so right:
