Dead Dock Ethernet after Thunderbolt 3 dock Gen2 Wrkstn dock Firmware - 10 [64] - 3.1.67.2

2020-10-22, 11:22 AM

Hi As per title really. After installing:

ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 dock Gen2 / Workstation dock Firmware Update Tool - 10 [64] - 3.1.67.2

via Lenovo Vantage, the dock Ethernet is not functioning and no longer shows up in Device Manager.

The dock and laptop have been left powered-off and unplugged from power for over half-an-hour, which seems to be generally required whenever rebooting this setup. Whilst all the other ports on the dock have come back, the Ethernet hasn't.

Any suggestions or people with similar experience?

Russ

Edit: Connected to a P52 fyi.

Edit 2: Just had an utterly unacceptable call with Lenovo Support, where despite this being a firmware update on the dock, they insisted I re-image the P52 before providing any further support. Not what I'd expect from ThinkPad support, let alone given the cost of this setup and there is the best part of two years remaining on warranty.

Hindsight for you but that firmware update takes a long time and lately Vantage has not been updating drivers properly with Lenovo having to re-release after folks complain. That firmware update (flashing process) takes long and should be done via manual download with everything unplugged. Only the dock and TB3 cable to your notebook is the safest way to do it.

Thanks for the update. Interesting if dissapointing.

Yeap the flash took literally hours.

I've got a new dock coming tomorrow that I can use to test and then return, it allows me to counter the Lenvo support people and hopefully move this forward. Do you know if the ficalness of these USB 3 docks is an industry-wide issue, or Lenovo specific?

It should not take hours to run the firmware update. But its kind of nerve wracking in that it takes a few minutes. I don't know about their reliability/ compatibility issues. I have the 40AN0135US (same as 235watt version except for the cables and AC adapter) for my P43s and can tell you it works fine except there is a major issue with Logitech (and perhaps other brands) wireless mouse receivers. Lenovo has been clueless. There are plenty of complaints about the dock but IMO its OK if you find a workaround for the mouse receiver. I don't use ethernet so have not checked that out. The 40AN is the only dock really that has the ability to charge the notebook at the same time is the main reason I went with it. I didn't consider other docks but toyed with getting a CalDigit TB3 dock. Except it didn't have enough wattage and I had read their were compatibility issues with some ThinkPads.

This last firmware I'm pretty confidant was hours. I closed all apps down and left it and came back later on it was taking so long. Agree that normal flashing takes minutes. I wonder if the expierience is differant if everything is unplugged.

So we have the same dock, except I'm on the UK version.

Having completed another power removal late yesterday the Ethernet port is running again. The only differance being I connected the dock to P52 connector first, and then connected the two power leads to the dock.

That you have no issues make me wonder if the dock I have is faulty. This has been the issue since day one, that if you restart not all the docks ports come back. Normally this is Ethernet and USB, HDMI continues to work. Never had it just with the Ethernet.

I might unpack the spare dock that's coming today after all and see how it does.

Were you able to find a resolution? I have a P52 and just ran into the same issue this morning during the 3.1.67.2 update. My computer doesn't recognize the dock anymore. I've reinstalled all of the appropriate drivers and it is still not detected.

Hello,

Via Lenovo Vantage a new firmware ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 dock Gen2 / Workstation dock 3.1.67 was pushed. I let it upgrade but then install progress is stuck at 87% for ages.

As mentioned in the forum the firmware update like a BIOS update can take a couple of minutes but not hours if you ask me.

Brgds,

Bas.

Hi, Were you able to resolve the issue? I am having the same issue with the TB3 and the LAN.

Hi, sorry for delayed reply.

The new dock came and made zero difference, so sent it back for a full refund. :)

I ended up leaving the dock and laptop turned off, both dock mains leads removed, and the dock to laptop lead removed from the laptop for several hours, perhaps overnight I think, and then it came back. However, the new firmware is constantly trying to install itself even though Vantage says its installation has succeeded. I've yet to gain the will power and motivation to look at that in detail.

Dead Dock Ethernet after Thunderbolt 3 dock Gen2 Wrkstn dock Firmware - 10 [64] - 3.1.67.2

Hi, as per other post, leaving it all off and disconnected from power fixed it overnight. There is defiantly some sort of electrical issue in the design between the dock and the P52,, possibly impacted by a driver. To do a full clean restart I have to shutdown, disconnect both power leads and the dock to laptop cable and leave for not less than thirty minutes before starting up again. Otherwsie the **bleep** is seen by the Ethernet and USB ports are dead. HDMI ports do work though. Someitme I can restart and its fine but that seems to be the exception and I've not been able to find the common cause for an normal restart to work. I have timed the power down period though and thirty minutes is the minimum to avoid the issue of dead dock ports.
