Re: Displayport to HDMI with audio

2009-05-14, 19:23 PM

@JanKwiat,

Don't know about the Display Port to HDMI issue but I can tell you that there are other problems associated with ATI video and this model of machine. See thread (and numerous others on driver issues);

http://forums.lenovo.com/lnv/board/message?board.id=W_ThinkPads&thread.id=3769

It seems my Display Port simply does not work. For that matter,per the above thread, under some circumstances DVI does not work when using a mini dock. From the symptoms you, I, and others are experiencing it looks like this card simply stops output of digital signals all together for no apparent reason.

After escalating my problem through Lenovo support I was promised an onsite tech to look at the problem possibly tomorrow.

I'll keep everyone informed as to a solution (or not) as events transpire.

 Grammar "no apparent reason"...

It seems like Apple and Dell are having the same problem. And its possibly the fault of Ati/Nvidia.

What do you all think about using a usb soundcard such as this. I know it shouldn't be necessary, but could provide us what we seek.

Opinions?

Crappy quality and not a digital output. It's a solution, but a very poor one if you are into quality. If you don't care about audio quality it will work.

Lenovo and many other manufacturers have crippled their hardware's recording capabilities for unexplained reasons. My opinion is they did it to comply with the desires of the recording industry-- which does not believe that you have the right to make copies of your purchased materials and should instead by the same songs and movies over and over again each time you move them to a new device. In other words, to chump the consumer. And sadly most consumers have a large appetite for being chumped.

It seem that SL400 can decode HD video and audio, but it have hdmi port instead of displayport. refer to http://nbbbs.zol.com.cn/frmView.php?frameon=yes&subcatid=32108&bookid=349613&ref0=http://www.google.cn/search?hl=zh-CN&newwindow=1&q=SL400+x4500+dts-hd&btnG=Google+搜索

So, if ATI 3650 can't decode HD audio, we can use integrated X4500 as SL400 do, i just wonder if hdmi can output digital audio decoded by GM45, why display can't?

Lenovo choose to do it that way. Big mistake. W700's do not have switchable video BTW.

"W700's do not have switchable video BTW"

Are you sure?  The vast majority of hands-on reviews seem to differ.

I'm referring to switching from the 75 watt Nvidia card to the low power on-board video.

So, Does the displayport work when switching to X4500 on board? Does anyone try it?

I own a W700 and I am an IT expert. It does not have swichable video. If it does it has been disabled at the hardware level. If you are thinking  of buying one just call Lenovo and ask them first-- they will tell you the same. It ought to have the feature, it ought to play digital audio out of the DisplayPort, it ought to be able to record digital audio from some input-- but alas it does not.

Manufacturers are adhering to the wishes of large broadcasters and media corporations who do not beliee you should be allowed to make copies of anything period.  They believe that if you buy a song for your iPod you should have to buy it again for your Zune.

As a related aside-- did you know that TiVo has the feature of recording a program on one box and then allowing the user to play it back on another box in their home? Say you record a movie in the livingroom and want to watch it later in the bedroom-- many broadcasters, such as HBO, will set flags in their broadcast preventing you from even watching the program in another room in your house. That's how **bleep** and greedy they ultinately are I'm afraid-- and US consumers have been very ameanable to these practices-- when IMO they should not be so deferential about being chumped.

No, michaelxchen, when using the Intel card, only the VGA output is available; with ATI, both are available.
