Docking Station Thunderbolt

2020-09-05, 22:17 PM

I trying to connect a Thunderbolt 3 Gen 2 Docking Station to my P51 Laptop.  I'm getting the following message:  The dock is not supplying enough power to the computer.  I've loaded the drivers on to the laptop and also loaded the latest firmware to the docking station/I think.  i say "I think" because of the issues that documenting here.

What can I do to resolve my issue?

I do not believe that the TB3 Workstation Gen2 dock is compatible with the P51.

I connected the docking station to a Lenovo P52 and it appears to work just fine.  However, I use this machine for running RHEL 8.  Do you know if drivers are available for using the docking station while running RHEL 8/Linux?

Hello,

The ThinkPad P51 requires a minimum of 170 watts to charge, and the USB-PD specification (a subset of the Thunderbolt 3 specification) limits charging over USB-C  to 100 watts, so it will not be possible to charge the P51 from the Thunderbolt 3 dock using just a Thunderbolt 3 cable.  Instead, a Lenovo SlimTip connection must be used to charge the ThinkPad P51 computer.

You may wish to investigate whether a ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock Split Cable (P/N: SC10Q68201) can be used with the dock and appropriate power adapters to charge the laptop.
